(ASCAP), Benson Music Group What makes Christmas real for you? Is it the gathering of friends and family around a glittering tree? How about the gifts that you give and receive? Perhaps it's that special feeling at Midnight Mass? I was struck by Commissioned's answer to what makes Christmas real. For the person in the song "4-Real Christmas," this holiday becomes "4 real" because another "did reveal a Christlike love all about yeah/And it's a 4-real Christmas/Ain't that is so 4 real." no doubt The song is off the new CD "The Real Meaning Ornaments on the Christmas tree/One for you and one for me/House full of happiness/And full ofjoy/Momma's little girl/And daddy's lit- tle boy/They're sharing love/With one anoth- er/Just like sisters and brothers/Christ would- n't have it/Any other way/Than to share love/On Christmas day yeah (REPEAT REFRAIN) Christmas here, yeah/Christmas gone/Still my heart felt so alone/(But to me)/You did reveal a Christlike love/That is so 4-real/Christmas 4 real/It's a 4-real Christmas of Christmas." The disc combines the top artists of Benson and Tribute Records, with several cuts being Gospel and up-tempo R&B. Remembering the birth of Christ is the reason we celebrate Christmas. However, if this day is to be more than the "Christmas here... Christmas gone" of the lyrics, then the "4-real"-ness of Christ's love must be reborn in each of us. Here are a few questions worth thinking about: How will I manifest a "Christlike love that is so 4 real"? How will I act with such love, not just on this holy day, but every day? Think in specifics. Our answers need to be more than nice-sounding statements. They need to be concrete ideas. Start in your own home. Ratings are also given for the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). "Citizen Ruth" (Miramax) Ridiculing both sides of the abortion issue is this failed satire in which the pregnant title char- acter (Laura Dern) cares more about getting money for her next glue-sniffing high than whether she has her baby or not. Director Alexander Payne treats both supporters and opponents of abortion as wild-eyed, power- hungry fanatics, while wrong- headedly trying to build sympa- thy for the benumbed addict whose glue-sniffing is a danger to herself and her. unborn child. Trivialization of a serious subject, a sexual encounter, substance abuse and frequent rough lan- guage. The USCC classification is O -- morally offensive. The MPAA rating is R -- restricted. "Everyone Says I Love You" (Miramax) Frivolous musical comedy cen- tering on the flighty love lives of an extended family of wealthy New Yorkers, including Drew Barrymore, Alan Alda and Goldie Hawn, whose neurotic ex-hus- band, Woody Allen, lives in Paris. Also written and directed by Allen, the low-key story uses a cast of nonsingers to gently spoof movie musical conventions but the results are decidedly mixed. An extramarital affair, occasion- al profanity and an instance of rough language. The USCC clas- sification is A-III -- adults. The MPAA rating is R -- restricted. "Ghosts" of Mississippi" (Columbia) Fact-based drama chronicles the struggle of a dedicated Mis- sissippi prosecutor (Alec Bald- win), prompted by Medgar Evers' widow (Whoopi Goldberg), to retry and convict the white supremacist (James Woods) guilty of the 1963 slaying of the civil rights leader nearly 30 years after two mistrials had left him a free man.
