According to Patti Rothberg's debut cassingle "Inside," indeed we are. I am not at all familiar with Rothberg's music, but in both sound and message on this recording I like her style. The song describes a person feeling isolated and lonely. She's been telling everyone that she is "fine" and "happy alone." Yet she wonders if"I can roll myself into a big black hole." This woman has been kidding herself that her friends will be "with me till the bitter end." In reali- ty she doesn't even know who they are, she exclaims. She decided that "my troubled mind I can't confide, though we are all the same inside." Clearly, she is in a tough emotional space. She needs to make new connections in order to break through her loneliness. Through my conversations with teens, I know that young people sometimes face this same sense of isolation. Perhaps their relationships with par- ents and/or siblings are not going well. Other times a young person might feel that he or she does not fit in with people at school. A teen who feels that way might struggle with the feelings of loneliness described in the song. Often there are no quick fixes for this hurt. However, there are places to seek new connections -- in a parish youth group, for example. groups are open to everyone, an up is all that is needed to meet people new friends. Admittedly, it takes some tx a meeting when you are not sure or if you will be welcome. However m in youth and parish ministry, I new person neglected or not welcomed. always, joining the parish youth group is tive way to feel more connected with I realize that individual sit lems differ. Yet I tend to agree wit gestion that there is much that we have when it comes to our needs. We all want a sense of belonging. We to experience the satisfaction of ac accomplishment. We all want to know the] affecting our immediate world. We all fun. Finally, we all have a hunger experience God. Parish youth groups create meeting these needs. The groups are each teen holds in common with Are we all the same inside? Yes, I we need to allow for lots of individ "sameness" gets expressed.
