14 The Message-- for Catholics of Southwestern Indiana December 4, 1987 'Bear in Mind -- Reading is Fun' Good Shepherd student.,; a spe0000,l special day reading books Students at Good Shepherd School, Evansville, had a special day celebrating "Children's Book Week," according to Brenda Donofrio, principal. The theme of the day was "Bear in Mind -- Reading is Fun." Donofrio said student activities included "bringing a stuffed bear to school to snuggle up with while reading, stories read aloud by teachers, stories read to the younger children by the older children and younger children showing off their reading abilities by reading to the older children." At the end of the day, the students were asked to tally the pages that they had read. The 157 students read a grand total of 21,274 pages. Fourth grader Nathan Vogt reads a special story to first grader Rob Smith. Both Good Shepherd fifth grader Kelly Sanders takes a break from reading to are students at Good Shepherd School. Allison Fischer and Kelli Joergens, kindergarten students. Message coloring contest winners are announced Judges had a difficult time choosing winners from the mound of entries receiVed dur- ing the first week of the Message coloring contest. Here are their picks for first place prizes: Kindergarten: Bradley Kempf, St. Joseph School, Vanderburgh County, age 6. Grades 1-2: Candace Rose Reynolds, St. Bernard School, Rockport, age 8. Grades 3-4: Annie Gayetsky, St. Matthew School, Mt. Ver- non, age 0. Second place prize winners are: Kindergarten: Ashley Hedges, Good Shepherd School, Evansville, age 6. Grades 1-2: Jennifer Schwenk, Holy Family School, Jasper, age 7. Grades 3-4: John Lippke, Flaget Elementary, Vincennes, age 9. Third place winners are: Kindergarten: Joni Betz, Celestine Elementary, Schnellville, age 5. Grades 1-2: Theresa Adler, St. James School, Haubstadt, age 6. Grades 3-4: Brian Steinkamp, Corpus Christi School, Evansville, age 10. Week two winners will be an- nounced in the Dec. 11 issue of the Message.
