November 18, 1988 The Message -- for Catholics of Southwestern Indiana Around the Diocese 13 A letter from 'Dear Abby' Students at Holy Family School, Jasper, have received a special letter from a special some- one -- newspaper columnist "Dear Abby." A reader recently questioned Abby on the term "palindrome." The sixth, seventh and eighth grade math students of Denise Miller knew the answer and wrote to explain. (A palindrome is any word, phrase or symbol that is the same forwards and backwards, such as morn, 1221.} Abby received the letters and replied: Dear Denise: How absolutely delighted I was to read your students' letters. They were wonderful/ The Holy Family School in Jasper must be a terrific school, and you a terrific teacher, to elicit such excellent work from your students. If space permits and my editors don't "cut" my column, I will try and print some of the students" letters. Thank you for writing, Denise, and for sending me your students' letters. Please give them a heartfelt thanks for me. They sound like a special group of people with promising futures ahead of them. I wish all of you much hap- piness and success. Warmest wishes, Abby P.S. Holy Family volleyball The eighth grade girls' volleyball team at Holy Family School, Jasper, finished second in the Holy Family Invitational Tourney. Coaches were Martha Wehr and Nancy Giesler. The seventh grade girls' team was also coached by Martha Wehr and Nancy Giesler. The fifth and sixth grade Holy Family intramural volleyball team was coached by Liz Milligan, with help from Mary Giesler and Cindy Meyer. WCCS winners First place winners from Westside Catholic Consolidated School, Evansville, at the Mater Dei High School junior high speech meet were Cindy Wan- nemuehler and Jeff Baumgart, duo interpretation, and Dianna Steffe, poetry. Deacon ordination Gregory Spencer was ordained to the order of deacon in the Arch- abbey Church at St. Meinrad Archabbey Nov. 5. Archbishop Edward O'Meara of Indianapolis presided at the ceremony. Spencer will be ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Evansville. His home parish is St. Joseph Church, Dale. Veterans Day Students at Westside Catholic Consolidated School observed Veterans Day last week with a special ceremony at St. Boniface Church, Evansville. Ellert Veterans Day at St. Theresa's Students at St. Theresa School, Evansville, held a special ceremony on Veterans Day this year, according to Sister Christine Kempf, O.S.B., principal. Six veterans, five from World War II and one from the Vietnam War, were presented certificates of appreciation. The veterans were Joe Becker, Ralph Guetling, Ed Oing, Jack Riggs, Paul Wig- gins and Rick Montgomery. The purpose of the ceremony was to honor and recognize the veterans and "thank them for the service they have given to the People 10-year 4-Hmembers Four members of Holy Family Church, Jasper, were honored at an annual 4-H Achievement Pro- gram; tllree 4-H members are 10-year members and a third is a nine-year member. -- Angle Weruer currently a student at Indiana University. is a 10-year 4-H member. She is the daughter of Donald and Bey Weruer. -- Janet Blessinger, currently a student at Indiana State Universi- ty, is a lo-year 4-H member. She is the daughter of Dave and Rita Blessinger. Darla Patterson. currently a student at Indiana University, is a 10-year 4-H member. She is th daughter of Robert and )ean Patterson. -- Amy Durcholz is a nine-year member of 4-H. Father Joseph Swartz of St. Matthew Church, Mount Ver- non, celebrates his birthday Nov. 24. 4-H Roundup Tara Brames, Emily Wright and Jenny Streicher of Holy Family Church, Jasper, have been chosen to attend the 4-H Round-up at Purdue University. Award of Excellence Melody Schmidt, Gretchen Keusch, Gwen Summers and Amy Durcholz of Holy Family Church. Jasper. were county winners in the Louisville Courier Award of Excellence Program. They'received plaques and cer- tificates for their achievements.
