II November 18, 1988 The Message -- for Catholics of Southwestern Indiana |1 I I I I I Presb00erate Convocation Clarifying the role of the priest was first goal of recent gathering By PAUL LEINGANG Message Editor "To clarify the role of the priest today" was the first of several goals of a presbyterate convocation at the Catholic Center, Evansville, Nov. 9. Presbyterate convocations have traditionally been gather- ings p]anned by Bishop Shea for the priests of the diocese. The most ecent gathering, however, was open to priests, deacons, parish staff, school of- ficials and others holding leadership positions in the Church today. Broader participation in the convocation reflects the challenge of the Church today, according to Father Jim Sauer, who is responsible for continu- ing clergy education efforts in the diocese. The mission of Christ is entrusted to all the baptised, he said, adding we are called to evangelize and to build up the body of Christ by ministering to one another. Among the presentations at the convocation was a session entitled, "Towards a vision of priesthood," by Father &ra;C,a: BAIBEUE RIBS-CHICKEN PORK-BEEF INSIDE DININGoBURGOO COMPLETE CARRY-OUT SERVICE CLOSED ON MONDAYS 425-1616 3119 W. He said the ongoing discussion about the role of the priest was not only a development of the years following the second Vatican Council. He said there have been at least five major revisions in the role of the priest during the life of the Church. It was not until the third century, he said, that the priest became presider at the Eucharist -- a role formerly reserved to a bishop. Celibacy was not a part of priestly life for the first one thousand years of the church. The Benedictine priest said that the areas of change today include changing expectations of others. Expectations from the people of a parish have gone from "administering the sacraments and promoting devotions" to "a renewal in eucharistic liturgical prayer and worship," he said. . Bishops also have different expectations of the priest, he said, and so do other priests and parish staff members. All the changes require new skills -- many of which were not ac- quired in seminary training. zubm" Sales & Service / TV&2-WayFM / 1916 W. FRANKLIN STREET PHONE (e12) 427e49 Herman Goebe] Motor Co. She discussed "pastoring according to Canon Law." She spoke about the role of the priest and the responsiblities of a priest in the newly revised code of Canon Law." Justin Clements, diocesan development director, presented information from a survey which was designed to determine what people in the diocese expect from a priest. Among the survey results presented were the answers given to complete the sentence, "The best priest is one who . . ." Sentence completions in- dicated that people expect a priest to be one who "is prayer- ful" and "prays well publicly;" one who "reflects God's presence and invites others to a deeper relationship with God;" one who "loves people;" one FR. MATTHIAS NEUMAN who "imitates Christ by living. a Christian life;" and one who "serves. ' ' In addition to clarification of the role of the priest, the con- vocation also was designed to establish a foundation for . several other goals: to develoF clergy continuing education workshops and institutes; to Golden jubilarians Mr. and Mrs. Anthony "Tony" Wehr will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a Mass of Thanksgiving at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 27 at Holy Family Church, Jasper.
