After the Gospel, eighth graders held lighted candles, each candle representing 100 years, and the total group representing the time since the birth of Jesus. Then Father William Wargel, pastor, called first graders who were dressed as saints, to come up to the altar. Each student-saint, including St. Ann, St. Francis and St. Bernadette, were situated on the paper timeline. Washington's St. Vincent de Paul Society During the past year, members of the St. Vincent de Paul Soci- ety in Washington made over 400 home, hospital and nursing home visits. Twelve active and 25 associate St. Vincent de Paul members contributed over 15,000 hours of service. Their principal work involved the operation of the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store in Washington, and the Assistance Line Program for the needy. The store is entire- ly staffed by volunteers. Father David Martin is spir- itual advisor, and Sister Rose Ann Muller is assistant spiritual advisor. Richard Risch is president, Harold Morrison is vice-presi- dent, and Helena Madden is sec- retary/treasurer. Active members include Margm'et Morrison, Carol Risch, Wilma O'Brian, Ruth Bradley, Connie Gray, Margaret Rodimel, Robert O'Brian, Leonard Bradley and John Sullivan. Happy Birthday! Father Eugene Dewig, pastor of Sacred Heart Church, Evansville, celebrates his birth- day Nov 11. Msgr Leo Conti, a retired Father Wargel encouraged the students to "remember these peo- ple who were heroes," reminding them "these are the people we honor today." He added, "God made it possi- ble for them to take a stand and make it right, to be a beacon of light. We honor these saints, and we remember that we are also called to be saints." Big Bingo The seventh annual Big Bingo was attended by 770, and reaped a profit of $37,049.60, according to Glenda Ossenberg, director of development for the Evansville Catholic Interparochial High Schools. All proceeds fund major projects at both Mater Dei and Memori- al high schools in Evansville. "We are grateful and thank all the 80 volunteers who worked that evening, the Bingo Commit- tee, Mater Dei and Memorial Friends and Alumni, parish feed- er schools, and businesses who worked and supported this event to make it successful," Ossenberg said. Big Bingo 1997 will be held Oct. 18. First place The Spell Bowl team at Holy Rosary School, Evansville, placed first in division competition among Class 4 schools. Deacon anniversary Gilbert Fehrenbaeher of St. Joseph Church, Vanderburgh County, was ordained a deacon Nov. 16, 1980. Parish Library at Holy Spirit A parish lending-library has been established at Holy Spirit Church, Evansville, under the direction of Jennifer Van Gain- pier and the parish Spiritual Life Commission. 45 years Congratulations to Bill and Rose Wonder as they celebrate their forty-fifth wedding anniver- sary. They are parishioners at St. Mary Church, Washington. Parish Council at St. Joseph Jim Werner is president of the Parish Council at St. Joseph Church, Vanderburgh County.
