Renovation begins The renovation of St. Meinrad Archabbey's former monastery is underway, partly due to a $1,000,000 gift from Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Ruxer of Jasper. In appreciation for their sup- port, the Rt. Rev. Timothy Sweeney, archabbot of St. Meinrad, announced that the first section of the renovated monastery will he dedicated to Alvin and Hilda Ruxer. The renovation program began in 1982 with a $500,000 challenge grant from Lilly En- dowment, Inc., of Indianapolis. Through the support of alumni and friends of St. Meinrad, $1.5 million in matching funds was raised. The estimated cost of the total renovation project is $4.5 million. Prayer Days Parishioners at Holy Family Church, Jasper, attended prayer days in October. Sister Patty Lasher lead the group on the topic of "Challenges and Changes." Happy birthday Father Eugene Dewig of St. Philip Church, Posey County, celebrates his birthday Nov. 11. Father Sylvester Loehrlein of St. John Church, Evansville, celebrates his birthday Nov. 7. Jasper D of I New officers for the Jasper Daughters of Isabella are Ruth Altman, regent; Mabell Schitter, vice-regent; Dorothy Oser, finan- cial secretary; Magy Clark, assis- tant financial secretary; Mildred Pfister, recording secretary; and Mary Miller, treasurer. Trustees are Hilda Klein, Em- ma Scherle and Agnes Schuler. Parish Council New members of the parish council at Sacred Heart Church, Evansville, are Matt Coniding and JoAnn Laugel. Anniversary Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Donald Weyer of St. Ferdi- nand Church, Ferdinand, as they celebrate their fortieth wedding anniversary. Parish census The new parish census at St. Anthony Church, Dubois Coun- ty, reveals a total of 396 families and 1230 parishioners. Ad awards Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center, Jasper, has received th Louisville Ad Club's Louie Award and the Louisville Courier Journal's Guten. The hospital won the award for a regional/national campaih featuring its rehabilitative ser- vices, including occupational therapy and cardiopulmonary services. Advertising at the hospital in under the direction of Lisa Witte. St. Theresa Mark Freeman, president of the parish council at St. Theresa Church, Evansville, reports that $8600 of'the parish budget ;tas been designated for nee-y organizations. In addition, $8690 will be donated to the Sisters of St. Benedict, Ferdinand. Other members of the parisk council are Vince Brenner, Judy Rode, Allen Schmitt, Pat Nell, Jim Kane, Jerry Bocktin and Mike Ehrhardt. Faculty retreat They closed the doors at Holy Redeemer School, Evansville, one day last week and the entire faculty headed up to Kordes Retreat House for the day. The one-day retreat was held "so the faculty could get away together as a group," explained Steve Waller, principal. The morning session was titled "In Praise of Teachers" with par- ticipants asked to remember special teachers they had and "what made them special," Waller said. The afternoon session focused on the Catholic Church, specifically "where the Church is today -- a Vatican II update," he said. Basically, the day allowed the Holy Redeemer faculty to "share a lot of friendship, companion- ship and prayer." New teacher Sister Jane lannaccone is the newest member of the faculty at Ascension School, Evansville. She is a member of the Sisters of Providence and is serving as a mission novice. She will make her first vows in June, 1988. Corpus Christi Ryan Specht a third grade stu- dent at Corpus Christi School, Evansville, was recently named to the Southern Indiana Swim Conference -- Eight and Under Boys All-Star Swim Team. Only three boys from southern Indiana were named. Winners Kristy Williams and Clarissa Baumgart were winners in the re- cent Halloween Story and Poetry I Contest sponsored by Mc- Collough Library, Evansville. Both are students at St. Benedict School, Evansville. Sports honors The flag football team at Resur. rection School, Evansville, won second place in the Mater Dei Feeder League. The school's girls' volleyball team tied for se- cond place in the Mater Dei Feeder League. Marian Heights Membership in the National Forensic League has been granted to Marian Heights Academy, Ferdinand. The forensics coach at the academy is Duane Verkamp. The league is a speech honorary society, which sponsors speech and debate events. Student council Recently elected student coun- cil officers at Holy Spirit School, Evansville are Jill Winiger, presi- dent; Alan Altstadt, vice- president; Jill Bradley, secretary, and Jami Frye, treasurer.
