The Message -- for Catholics of Southwestern Indiana October Mary Help of Christians First church at Mariah Hill community was built in 1857 i]i Hill' as the name of the town laid out on Section 14. "Hill' is German for "Help." Postal officials in Washing- ton, D.C. misread the name in German script in 1862 -- and recorded it as Mariah Hill. The first church, a small frame building, was erected in 1857. Benedictine priests from nearby. St. Meinrad came to preside at Mass and the sacra- ments for the community. Construction of the present church building came in stages, and included a unique A German phrase and a postal misspelling helped shape the name of the parish and the surrounding commu- nity of Mary Help of Christians Church in Mariah Hill. In 1850, land was purchased from Jacob and Maria Anna Spaeth for a church in Spencer County. The community was then known as Spaethville, but times -- and the name -- quickly changed. In 1860, Spencer County records list the name, "Maria method. The frame building continued first built for the community continued to be used for Mass, while masonry construction work went up around and above it, starting in 1864. An addition was completed in 1888. The spire, 135 feet tall, was added in 1890. Stained glass windows depict- ing the life of Mary were im- ported from Munich in 1908. Benedictine Father Donald Walpole designed the ceramic Madonna above the main church entrance. Benedictine priests served the parish through 1979. Im- provements to the parish facili- ties have included construction of a parish hall, an enlarged rectory, and a new church organ. Benedictine pastors included Fathers Ulrich Christen, Fi- delis Maute, Conrad Acker- man, Maurice Wagner and An- drew Bauer. Many other Benedictines served the com- munity for short periods of time and at various occasions. The first diocesan priest to be appointed pastor was Fa- ther William Dietsch (1979- 1987. He was followed by Fa- ther Albert Scheller (1987-1992) and the current pastor, Father Gregory Spencer. Tied championship ends football season The following information was provided by Thomas J. In the second contest, to de- termine the league champi- onship, St. Theresa/Holy Re- deemer took on second place St. Benedict/Holy Name. In their earlier match-up, St. Theresa/Holy Redeemer had been the winner in overtime. In the final game, St. Theresa/Holy Redeemer got on the scoreboard first on a 28- yard keeper by Jake Tucker. The point-after-touchdown at- tempt was no good. The P.A.T. was wide. They scored again in the sec- ond quarter on the first play after a fumble recovery, on a 17-yard run by Corey Keown. Dan Flynn added two points on the P.A.T. with a kick. They scored once again in the third quarter when Andre Thomas, avoiding several tacklers, ran 71 yards for the touchdown. The P.A.T. kick was no good. Thomas scored again in the fourth quarter on a 33-yard run around right end. Todd Zimmer added the extra point with a pass 'eception. The final score, 27-6, gave St. Benedict/Holy Name a tie for the league championship with St. ?heresa/Holy Redeemer.
