GETrELFINGER While I was in Rome with the "Back to School for Bishops," in my weekly call home, I discovered that I had been invited by the Raskob Foundation to attend a symposium in Kansas City, Missouri, dealing with the appointment of Parish Life Coordinators (otherwise known as Pastoral Ad- ministrators) who are not priests. I accepted the in- vitation. It was held at the Institute for Pastoral Life last Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. It was both intense and worthwhile. In our diocese we have two such Pastoral Ad- ministrators; Sister Mary Terrence Knapp, Q.S.B., at Bloomfield, and Deacon Don Lahay at All Saints and St. Mary's in Daviess County. The Sacramental Minister, better known as the attending priest assigned to celebrate Eucharist, provides the opportunity for the .Sacraments of Reconciliation {Confession} and Annointing of the Sick. This is handled differently in each case. Father Ronald Zgunda from Linton is the Sacramental Minister for Holy Name Church, Bloomfield. The priest for All Saints and St. Mary's is provided through the Clergy Assistance Pool coordinated by Father August Busch. In both Thc,.re and here: concern is universal cases, Sister Mary Terrence and Deacon Lahay are responsible for setting the schedules and identify- ing the needs. It is uncanny that last Sunday at St. John's in Loogootee where I participated in the Washington Deanery Convention of Parishes we were dealing with the same issues: pastoral administrators and priestless Sundays. I had asked the priests and deacons of the Washington Deanery led by our Dean, Father Leo Kiesel, to make recommendations to me about how we should approach priestless Sundays. This was part of the agenda at the Deanery Convention held at St. John's, Loogootee, last Sunday. (I am sad to report that Father James Lex, who Was very much involved, was unable to participate; he is now recovering from heart surgery.) It is also coincidental and timely that an item on the agenda at the National Conference of Catholic Bishops meeting in early November is the format for celebrating the Lord's Day (either Satur- day evening or Sunday morning) in the event that a priest is not available. The attendance at the celebration of Holy Mass (the Eucharist} is still expected of all professing Catholics. I hope that we will always be able to provide the celebration of Eucharist in all . our parishes -- or at least in parishes nearby even in the cases of emergency. We must be prepared however in the event that a priest is not available. It is ironic that since I last wrote about priestless Sundays in the event of bad weather or the sickness of the resident priest or the Sacramental Minister, two of our "healthy" and active priests have had heart surgery, one six by-passes and the other three by-passes. Next week, I will discuss the different ways that the Lord's day can be celebrated without the presence of the priest when such is absolutely necessary. In the meantime, pray for the quick recovery of Fr. James Lex and Fr. Tim Tenbarge referred to above. Both are making speedy recoveries. May I encourage you not to wear them out with visits. Pray, write and call! A busy signal might very well be, and should be, rest timer All Souls Day The newly renovated St. Joseph Cemetery interment chapel, above, will be open for viewing before and after the All Souls Day Mass which will be held in the mausoleum chapel Sunday, Oct. 29 at 2 p.m. On Thursday, Nov. 2, the Feast of All Souls, Bishop Gerald A. Gettelfinger will celebrate Mass at 3 p.m. in the St. Joseph Cemetery mausoleum chapel. - Message Photo by Michelle Girten JASPER, INDIANA D KNOX COUNTY SEED COMPANY VINCENNES Pele Bara Metal WED & THUR$ NITE SPECIALS 10 oz.
