The rectory, below, was completed in 1964 Story and Photos'By Paul Leingang DEANERY POY EVANSVILLE WEST DEANERY EVAN,  EAST DEANERY Good Shepherd i Parishioners describ working with a Father James Hannigan was the founding pastor of Good Shepherd Church, Evansville; he served as pastor from July 20. 1955 until March 1963. Father Richard Hoffman served as pastor from 1963 to 1970; Father August A. Busch was pastor from 1970 to 1983. The current pastor, Father Kenneth Herr, was appointed June 14, 1983. The first parishioners affectionately called the site of Good Shepherd Church, "Father Hannigan's Bean Patch," according to parish history, In September 1955, Father Hannigan wrote, "The work of establishing the parish.., will be difficult, even with the full cooperation of all. Unless most of the persons in the territory cooperate, the parish will be sl0w in accomplishing the work for which it was established -- the greater honor and glory of God and the salvation Of souls. ' ' Seventy new parishioners were present at the first meeting. first parish counselors were chosen: Martin Durchholz, A1 Folz, Ed Hirsch, Joe Hopf and Kenneth Loehr. Early fund raising efforts ircluded the work of the Altar Society and the Men's Club. The Altar Society held a paper drive, card parties and raffles. The Men's Club held a turkey shoot on the grounds of Holy Rosary Parish. Construction of the new gymnasium style church was begun 12, 1958. The first Mass was celebrated in the new building on Trinity Sunday, May 24, 1959. The school doors opened Sept. 8 to 217 students who were taught by the Sisters of Providence. Parish history records that the first principal was Sister Annette, S.P.; also teaching when the sch opened were Sister Marie David, S.P., and Sister Agnella. Three of the 11 classrooms were temporarily used'as living quarters. Father Hannigan had resided at Holy Rosary Church rectory, when he began his work in founding the new parish, A mobile was purchased as a rectory in August 1960; a permanent begun in August 1963 and completed in June 1964. The Shrine of the Good Shepherd was installed Sept. 17, 1971. The Shrine of the Resurrected Christ was installed April 11, 198; Msgr. Michael Wolf, in thename of Holy Trinity contribu(ed $70,500 in 1974 and another $50,000 in 1976 to the parish. On Holy Saturday, 1983, mortgage notes totalling $115,000 were used to kindle the new Easter fire during the vigil service at i Good Shepherd Church. According to Father Busch, pastor at that time, the debt retirement was possible because of $75,000 from the Ladies Altar Society and the Men's Club, along with debt eliminati, pledges from parishioners.
