Waving the banner of Catholic teach- ing on the permanence of marriage and the evil of abor- tion, the pope spent much of his Oct. 2-5 stay in Rio de I Janeiro, rallying Catholic fam- ilies to defend and strengthen their bonds. Gay, lesbian children are to be loved A 20-page statement, "Always Our Children," was released Oct. 1 by the Committee on Marriage and Family of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops. Its central message is that parents with homosexual sons or daughters should love their children ,and never reject them, even if the son or daughter engages in activities that the parent cannot accept or con- done. Unnecessary revenge The upcoming execution of Gary Davis in Colorado is a sanitized and unnecessary form of revenge, said Den- ver's Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, Davis is scheduled to die by lethal injection Oct. 11. Cardinal dies Cardinal Bernard Yago, the retired archbishop of Abidjan in the Ivory Coast and a long- time proponent of "African- ization" 6f the church, died at age 81, the Vatican said. Car- dinal Yago was Ivory Coast's first cardinal and its first native bishop. His death leaves the College of Cardi- nals with 147 members, of whom 108 are under the age of 80 and therefore eligible to vote in a conclave. Normal procedures Pope John Paul II said the normalprocedures should be used in investigating the sainthood cause of Mother Teresa, whom many consid- ered a living saint. He indicat- ed that the Vatican canoniza- tion process would not be overridden in her case. He made the remarks Oct. 2 on a plane taking him to Brazil. Hindus honor Mother Teresa An image of Mother Teresa sat with the goddess Durga as Hindus in West Bengal state celebrated Durga Puja, their most popular festival. During the celebration, devotees sing, dance and pray before clay images of Durga. According to Swami Sivananda, Durga Puja is the "greatest Hindu festival," in which God is adored as Mother.
