00Mass schedules during00 'Convocation 87'
Mass schedules and emergency phone numbers for
the seven deaneries in the Diocese of Evansville are
printed on this page, as a ready reference for Catholics
in Southwestern Indiana, during the days of the 1987
presbyterate convocation.
Attendance is expected at "Convocation 87" for
diocesan priests and members of religious orders who
serve in parishes in the "diocese.
Announcements have been made from the pulpits
and in parish bulletins, to prepare for the unusual situa-
tion. Priests from the diocese are meeting at Kentucky
Dam Village State Resort Park, October 12-15. For most
parishes, the schedule will have parish priests leaving
after Mass Monday morning, and returning late
Thursday.
Father Jim Sauer, director of continuing education
for priests, says the convocation will provide priests
with an opportunity to reflect on the significant
moments of grace in the life of the group as a whole,
and to share their prayer and reflection with one
another. Priests will also have time to reconcile and
heal any present difficulties within the group. As the
sessions continue moving from past to present and
beyond, priests will also try to answer the question,
"What do we need in order to move into a grace-filled
future?"
Planning for the future includes a major effort to
understand the changes a declining number of priests
will bring. Recent studies in the diocese showed a loss
of 13 priests from active ministryj from 1982 through
1986. From 1987 through 1991, the study attempted to
project the result of new ordinations, resignations,
retirements, and deaths; the projection indicates the
possibility that the diocese could lose 22 more priests
from active ministry during the next four years.
The decline in the number of priests will mean a
change in the ministry shared with deacons and the
laity.
