By FATHER DON DILGER COLUMNIST Neither Jesus nor those who rewrote his parables were con- corned with such details. A parable is a teaching instrument to make a point or points. If reality suffers, that is no concern of the parable's author, nor should it be ours. There are two more primitive forms of this parable available to us. One is in Luke 14:16-24; the other in an ancient book called "the Gospel of Thomas." Matthew considerable rewrote the parable to suit his own ends or what he wanted the parable to teach. The original parable had no king, no son, no wedding, but only a banquet given by an ordinary man. Only one servant is sent out and only once. The invitees give excuses but do not mistreat or kill the servant, so no army is needed to take revenge, no city is destroyed. Instead of inviting anyone from the streets, Luke, with his usual concern for the underprivilegII, has the ser- vant invite "the poor, the maimed, the blind, the lame." The still older form of the parable in the Gospel of Thomas concludes with a statement ex- cluding all businessmen from the banquet! In the original form of the parable as Jesus may have used it, the parable is a "good news para- ble." This means that it justifies Jesus' outreach to the poor, to sinners. Jesus addressed the parable to religious leaders of his time. He appeals to them to see themselves in those who had excuses for not ac- cepting his good news. After Jesus' departure the Church would have used the parable as a justifica- tion for preaching the good news, the message of and about Jesus, to nations other than the Jews. The parable would have illustrated how those to whom Jesus was originally sent rejected his met- turned justifiably to other nations. Matthew revises the parable and places it into his gospel as part of his story of the confrontation between Jesus and religious leadership of his (Matthew's) time. He indicts the religious leaders as responsible for persecuting and even murdering Christian missionaries. The burning of the city in Matthew's form of the parable reflects the destruc- tion and burning of Jerusalem in the Roman-Jew- ish war in 70 $LD. The king is God. The son is Jesus. The army is the Roman army which becomes an instrument of God's vengeance in Matthew's theology. Matthew alone adds the little parable about the man without proper dress for the wedding ban- quet. The wedding garment represents the good works that every Christian must do, just like the good works on which salvation depends in Matthew's parable of the last judgment, Matthew 25:31-46. Those who do not have them are thrown out of the banquet, the heavenly kingdom. When Matthew adds the words, "many are called but few are chosen," he reflects the experience of his own Christian community. Some had come into the Church, but had defected. The statement must therefore be understood within Matthew's experi- ence and not be loosely applied to a theology of pre- destination to hell for most humans. A god with such a policy is not the God of the Christians who through Jesus extends his love most of all to the underprivileged, to sinners, and to the ordinary people, who forgives all to the end. A buffet dinner and dance will follow at Clearcrest Pines Country Club. The couple was married Oct. 9, 1943, at St. Joseph Rectory, Jasper. They are the parents of five sons: Bill and Tim, both of Charlotte, N.C., Andy of Newburgh, Matt of Evansville, and Tom of Boonville, and seven daughters: Laura of Jasper, Julia of Nashville, Tenn., Alice of Indianapolis, and Martha, Sarah and Marianne, all of Evansville. Their daughter Anita is deceased. They have 21 grandchildren. Mr. Scheessele is president of Schalco Construction and Quality Door; he previously worked with Central Glass Company. Mrs. Scheessele retired this summer after working 25 years as a registered nurse at SL Mary's. She volunteers at Washington Avenue Health Center and at St. Mary's Health Center.
