ELLERT Message Staff Writer Webster's defines acacia as "a tree or shrub with yellow or white flower clusters." However, the acacia tree has a much deeper and richer meaning for Black Catholics -- particularily Latoski McCarty, Doretha Moore and Anne Wagner. They received crosses made from the wood of the acacia tree when they attended the Na- tional Black Catholic Congress this past May. McCarty and Moore wore their crosses at a meeting last month when they discussed the National Black Catholic Pastoral Plan established at the Congress. The acacia tree is the oldest tree in Africa, according to Moore. It has roots that run "big, deep and strong" and is a sign that Black Catholics also have a deeply-rooted history, she said. MOORE AND McCarty said they are forming a committee to "go over the plan and make it reflect the needs" of the Diocese of Evansville. "We've got to get involved," said Mc- Carty. "We've got to do more than go to church on Sunday." The Message is beginnning the first in a series outlining the National Black Catholic Pastoral Plan.'At right is the first section. Papal chair Upholsterer chosen to design chair PECONIC, N.Y. (NC) -- A 38-year-old upholsterer from Peconic was chosen to design a chair for the pontiff's stop in Columbia, S.C., as a result of a priest's chance visit to the man's parish. "It's an incredible thing to have happen in one's life," said Joseph S. Czartosieski, the owner of JS Custom Upholster- ing, who has worked in the business since he was 14. "This is like fulfilling a dream," Czartosieski said in an interview with The Long Island Catholic, newspaper of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, N.Y. The walnut chair -- which Czartosieski has upholstered with a "tone on tone, royal red silk damask" -- will be used during the pope's meeting with other Christian leaders at the University of South Carolina Sept. 11. When Passionist Father Jerome Vareb met a friend of the upholsterer at a parish mission he conducted at St. Patrick Church in Southold, he men- tioned his search for a chair for the pope's visit, and the friend mentioned Czartosieski. Soon the upholsterer went to work. Father Vareb, special secretary to the U.S, bishops' Committee for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs, is in- volved in planning the pope's South Carolina stop. Though originally Czar- tosieski had planned to build the chair from scratch, he discovered time was short and began frequenting antique shops to locate a chair that he could adapt and upholster. One day he saw a chair being placed in the window of a Southhampton shop. "I had been driving around, it was rainy, cloudy, but the sun broke out" and shone in the shop ..... window.where he,found a chair . with eagles carved on the legs. The eagles, a national symbol of Poland, drew his attention, he said. He had the chair made higher and wider, then contacted a New York silk dealer to pur- chase material for upholstering. He speaks with pride of the chair, which is to remain in South Carolina after the pope's departure. "I worked on it like the old masters did 150 to 200 years ago," Czartosieski said. Pastoral Plan: Section One PART I - BLACK HISTORY AND CULTURE I. Black History and Culture: We propose the study and examination of the cultural historical contributions of Black Americans to the Church and to society. II. The Development of Cultural Resources: We propose the support and development of cultural resources which reflect the richness of the Black experience. III. Identification of Cultural Skills and Talents: We propose that the Catholic Com- munity identify skills and talents of local Blacks which could be useful in bringing a cultural perspective into the life of the Church. IV. The Use of Black Cultural Symbols: We propose the integration and cultivation of symbols and artifacts which are of cultural and historical significance to Black Americans in Houses of Worship, Catholic Schools and Catholic Institutions which serve special needs. PART II - THE BLACK FAMILY I. Black Family Traditions: We propose the strengthening and reinforcing of Black Fami- ly values. II. The Needs of a Single Parent Family: We propose that single parent families be supported and strengthened. III. Male Role Models: We propose.the support and affirmation of positive male role models. IV. The Black Family and Parishes: We propose parish networking to establish substantive and effective programs which enhance family life among Black Catholics. PART IH - BLACK YOUTH I. Youth Concerns and Needs: We propose that the parish and the local church address youth involvement in drugs, violent crime and sexual acting out. II. The Leadership Training of Black Youth: We propose the formation of specific leadership training programs which will enable young people the opportunity to achieve academic, cultural and spiritual growth. III. Black Catholic Youth and Family: We propose that Black youth be given the oppor- tunity to grow and develop in a positive and spiritually sound environment. IV. Youth and Diocesan Activities: We pro- pose that diocesan activities promote the ac- tive involvement of Black youth. PART IV - INTEGRAL RELIGIOUS EDUCATION I. Education for Parish Ministry: We pro- pose a comprehensive educational program for ministry within the church at all levels. II. Catechetics and the Black Community: We propose that a concerted effort be made to tailor catechetical materials and instructions to meet the need of Black children and adults. III. The Study of the Bible: We propose that comphensive bible study and celebration of the bible message be part of the total parish life. PART V - WORSHIP AND SPIRITUALITY I. Black Spiritual Development: We pro- pose the continual development of programs which enhance the Life of the Spirit of Black Catholics. II. Spirituality in the Home: We propose that all Black families cultivate the concept of the "Church in the home" to infuse Black family life with spiritual values. III. Evangelization and Spirituality: We propose a continual effort towards the forma- tion and development of Black spirituality rooted in the African tradition and in the historical and cultural experience of Black Americans. IV. Black Spirituality and Diocesan Pro- grams: We propose that spiritual enrichment programs, renewal programs, programs such as the RCIA and others be infused with Black spiritual values. PART VI - LITURGY I. Liturgy and the Black Tradition: We propose that a conscious effort be made to in- fuse elements of Black culture into the Roman Liturgy. II. Development and Training Liturgy: We propose that there be continuing develop- ment ef available resources. We propose this development and training in liturgy be inter- woven in all aspects of parish life and ex- perience.
