I told him I was afraid of miss- ing the camaraderie of the work- place, afraid I would lose touch with some of my valued chums, afraid I would get depressed from the lack of stimulating challenges and, ultimately, afraid retirement Would make me feel worthless. As it turned out, none of these things happened. Because of that, I was able to encourage Bart to give the prospect of retir- ing serious consideration. The first step was the need to give himself" permission to even think about it. One way to begin the process of discernment is to pretend that you are going to retire for about two weeks. Whenever your job requires you to do something you don't enjoy, say to yourself, "This is the last time I'll do this." When you make your daily list of things to do, be aware of what you would or would not miss doing. When you hear about a book you'd like to read or an activity in which you'd like to take part, tell yourself, "I'll have time for that." In my own case, I was praying for discernment, looking for signs and waiting for divine interven- tion. To my surprise, retirement gradually started to seem right. After I made the decision, the As for telling others in the workplace, I made a point of going to each office to tell my news myself. This made each person in each office feel valued and ensured that conjecture as to my motivation was limited. The suggestion of a farewell party did not appeal to me at first. But I realized that bringing my career to closure in a visible, public way was psychologically essential ifI was going to start a new phase of my life. I not only had one party, but two. Retirement, though, is much more than the period after one's Life begin;00 at 40.. Advant, age Banking begins at 50. People age 50 and over are special customers to us. If children and/or grandchil- dren are a part of your life, think of ways to be of service and to strengthen relationships, espe- cially by staying in close contact. What can you do to become more a part of your parish com- munity? What committees need members? Would you like to be a eucharistic minister or a lector? You may want to choose a pro- ject that needs your years of ex- pertise and your talents. Another life-giving relationship to be nurtured is that of nature. Be aware of seasonal changes in your area. Plant flowers. Put up a good, squiTel-proofbird feeder. If your situation will accommodate it, a small pet can add a new di- mension to your life. A friend sent me a card saying, "Retirement has its ups and downs. You can get up whenever you want to and lie down when- ever you feel like it." This is cer- tainly true, but. there are many other windows of opportunity that. will open to you when you m'e retired. And what happened to my friend, Bart? One month alter talking to him, I received an en- velope from him with an an- nouncement of his retirement. Once he gave himself permis- sion to evaluate the possibility, he noted, the prospect of retiring became irresistible. When he felt at peace with the idea, he set about making it happen.
