We cil in 1965, religious life in Catholic Diocese of Evans- ulate Conception is the moth- end Order of St. Francis, oE the modern world should be directed by five principles: 1. The Gospel must be the supreme rule. 2. Each religious institute should follow the intentions of its founder. 3. All institutes should par- ticipate in the work of the universal Church. 4. All religious should have a clear understanding of con- temporary problems in order to help bring people to the Church. 5. Religious life must be understood not as activity but as a way of life according to the evangelical counsels of chastity: poverty, and obedi- ence. Preliminary information gathered for the next edition of the Yearbook of the refer to her as a "nun" al- though strictly speaking that title applies only to women who belong to a religious order with solemn vows. Our common terminology may not have canonical pre- cision, but there is common acknowledgement of the fol- lowing fact: Women religious members of various com- munities who follow various organizational structures have taught, healed, minis- tered, and witnessed to the Gospel in southwestern Indi- ana for more than 150 years. They have much in corn- mOll. According to the Decree on the Appropriate Renewal of Religious Life, Perfectae Carl- tails, which was promulgated by the Second Vatican Coun- ville lists 327 sisters who live, work and pray in the diocese. They are members of 15 reli- gious orders, societies, con- gregations or communities. The work of women reli- gious in southwestern Indi- ana dates back to 1840, when Mother Theodore Guerin, S.P., came from France to the United States -- to found the motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Mary-of-the-Woods. Mother Guerin has been de- clared "venerable" -- the title given to a person who al- though not yet declared a saint or even blessed, has been judged to have lived, the cardinal and theological virtues to a heroic degree. Communities of women re- ligious are not part of the diocesan structure of the church. Communities are au- tonomous, and bound by their own rule. They collabo- rate in the work of the partic- ular church (the diocese} and the universal church. Within the geographical territory of the Diocese of Evansville are three religious headquarters: the Mater Dei Provincialate at Evansville is the headquarters of the East- ern Province of the Daughters of Charity; Monastery Immac- erhouse of the Sisters of St. Benedict at Ferdinand; and the Monastery of St. Clare is the motherhouse of the Sec- known as tile Poor Clares.
