The Message --for Catholics of Southwestern Indiana '5 Commentary Gospel Commentary for Sunday, July 31, 1989 Seventeenth Sunday-Ordinary Time- Luke 11:1.13 It a person s literary work mirrors his life, then Luke was a man of prayer. The Gospel of Luke more than any other Gospel is an instruction in prayer. Throughout his Gospel Luke again and again writes prayer into the material he received without it. One might say that nothing happens in this Gospel unless prayer precedes. The very first scene in the Gospel, the apparition to Zachary, happens while Zachary is at prayer. Luke ends his Gospel with the disciples praying in the temple. While Jesus receives the Holy Spirit in his baptism in Mark, Matthew and Luke it is only in Luke that Jesus prays at this coming of the Holy Spirit. Matthew has his Sermon on the Mount; Luke has his Sermon on the Plain, but only in Luke does Jesus pray before he addresses his disciples. Jesus chooses the Twelve in Mark, Mat- thew, and Luke, but only Luke has him praying all night before making that choice. In the same three Gospels Jesus asks the disciples the important question about his identity, but only in Luke does he pray before he asks the question. So it is in to- day s gospel reading. Jesus teaches his disciples to pray only after he himself is depicted as praying. Our reading today Consists of Luke's form of the Our Father, a short parable about a persistent friend, and some individual sayings of Jesus about prayer. The Gospels give us two forms of the Our Father, that of Matthew and the somewhat shorter form of Luke. While Matthew's vrsion begins with "OUR FATHER," Luke's version begin with "FATHER." The Lucan version is considered more original. One reason would be that the direct ad- dress, "FATHER," was used by Jesus otherwise to address the Father, not "OUR" Father, but simply "FATHER." Despite the probable originality of the Lucan version, it is Matthew's Our Father which the Church has used from ancient times as its of- ficial prayer both in and ouside the liturgy to this day. Few people would know the Lucan Our Father and few would know that there are two ver- sions of this prayer in the Gospels. In the little parable that follows the Our Father, an unexpected guest arrives at a man's house. The man goes to a neighbor who is his friend and asks for three loaves of bread to feed his unexpected guest. Either the guest was a huge man who was starving, or the host thought he might as well ask for more, or the word "bread" should be translated as rolls or bagels. But the friend is already in bed and so is his family. He refuses to get up and help his neighbor in this emergency. But the man keeps beating on the door until he gets his bread. The one who goes to ask for bread represents every Christian who petitions God for what is needed. The sleeping householder represents God. This is a rather unusual depiction of God. The reason the householder finally gives in to the shameless begging of his neighbor is so he can get back to sleep. The lesson: if at first you don't suc- ceed, etc. Luke now follows with the well-known say- ing: "Ask and you will receive. Seek and you will find. Knock and it will be opened to you. The one who seeks finds. To the one who knocks it will be opened." Does Luke mean that avery prayer is granted? There are other sayings both in this and in other Gospels that say the same thing. Yet our ex- perience seems to be different. Already among the early Christians this discrepancy between ex- perience and the words of the Gospel was noticed. The author of the Letter of James tells his readers the reason they do not receive is that they waver in faith. "That person must not suppose that a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways, will receive anything from the Lord." Luke closes his little treatise on prayer by assuring his readers that if they themselves re- spond to their children's request for "good gifts," "how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask himT' Jesus had received the Holy Spirit at his bap- tism while he was praying. The Church received the same Holy Spirit on Pentecost while one- hundred-twenty disciples were gathered at prayer. It is Luke's opportunity to write another favorite theme into the material he received. That theme is the Holy Spirit without whom nothing happens in Luke's Gospel. Prayer and the Holy Spirit are in- timately connected. The lesson of this readings is that every Christian who perseveres in prayer will be heard and will receive not only "good gifts" but the supreme gift from whom all good things flow, the Holy Spirit. Schmitt and the former Marjorie Reibel were married August 1, 1939, at St. Francis Xavier Church, Poseyville. Father John Schenck officiated. The couple has eight children, Bob, Charles, Pat Elpers, Marilyn Elpers and Nancy Laswell, all of Haubstadt; Don of Princeton; Ruth Ann Hurt of Francisco; and Roger of Kernersville, N.C. They also have 30 grandchildren and 3 great-grandsons. Schmitt is a retired farmer. "The other chaplains visited people in their rooms," counseling and helping those who were less seriously injured or who had already been treated, he said. Marian, which is run by the Sisters of Mercy, handled 85 victims of the disaster, a hospital spokeswoman said Ju- ly 20. Seven died in the hospital, 40 were treated and hospitalized, and 38 were released after treatment.
