au 28,1989 The Message -- for Catholics of Southwestern Indiana World Youth Day Pope John Paul II plans youth day fete ! August visit to Spain By AGOSTINO BONO Catholic News Service VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope John Paul II plans to celebrate World Youth Day with thousands of young peo- ple on pilgrimage to the tomb of St. James the Apostle during his brief trip to Spain in August. The tomb is located in San- tiago de Compostela, Spain, the focal point O f the pope's Aug. 19-21 trip. The schedule, released July 17 by the Vatican, lists six Papal events related to World Youth Day, celebrated this year on Aug. 19. They include a symbolic papal walk of slightly over 100 yards along the pilgrimage path. This will be the first time since World Youth Day began in 1986 that it has not been celebrated on Palm Sunday. The Vatican decided to change the date for the world obser- vance so that it coincided with an international Catholic youth pilgrimage to Santiago de Com- postela. Many local obser- vances of youth day, however, remain on Palm Sunday. The tomb is one of Europe's most important pilgrimage sites. Santiago is Spanish for St. James. The Vatican itinerary also lists papal stops at Oviedo and the Marian shrine at Covadonga. Here is the pope's itinerary, released by the Vatican. Times listed are local times with Eastern daylight time in paren- theses.
