Perseverance in prayer By FATHER DONALD DILGER Columnist Gospel Commentary for July 26, 1998: Seven- teenth Sunday: Ordinary Tlme: Cycle C: Luke 11:1-13 Luke has just completed an important discussion of discipleship of Jesus. He extends the boundaries of discipleship beyond Jewish males to include both Samaritans and women. The next topic in his cate- chetical instruction is an important function of disci- pleship, prayer. The setting is Jesus at prayer. For Luke's theology Jesus is the first Christian saint and must always be the primary example for Christians. Jesus' disciples approach him with a request, "Teach us to pray like John (the baptizer) taught his disci- ples. The prayer that follows has come to be known as the "Our Father, for it is with these two words that Matthew's version of this prayer begins, but Luke's version does not. Since Matthew's version has become the standard form of "the Lord's Prayer" used by all Christians, we also refer to Luke's version as the "Our Father." Luke's form of this prayer is shorter. For fundamentalist literalists who would insist that both forms, Luke and Matthew, are exactly as Jesus spoke them, one could say that Jesus and his disciples and the early Christians used the shorter Lucan form when they were in a hurry. Luke begins very directly, "Father." This form, rather than "Our Father," seems closer to the historical Jesus, because that is how Jesus is depicted as praying on other occasions. St. Paul tells us that due to the fact that we have within us the same Holy Spirit that Jesus shared with his Father, we also may now address God directly as "Father." " Psalm 119:105 directly addressed as Jesus is said to have done. Luke adds five petitions similar to five of Matthew's peti- tions. Matthew has seven petitions, while another form of the "Our Father" found in a late first century book called "the Didache" has seven petitions. Luke begins, "Hallowed be thy name." This is an echo of Old Testament sentiments that the name of Israel's God become known and be recognized as sanctified or vindicated. The primary expression of such a sentiment is found in Ezekiel 36:22-28. The Israelites are in exile in Babylon. Yahweh speaks through the prophet Ezekiel, "It is not for your sake, House of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations to which you have come.., and the nations will know that I am Yahweh...when I vindicate my holiness through you in their sight." How is this to be accomplished? Yahweh will gather his people dispersed among the Gentiles and bring them back into their own land. He will wash them clean, give them a new heart and a new spirit, so that they will from now on keep his commandments. Pas- sages such as this became important Old Testament background for the Christian sacrament of baptism and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. For Luke's Christians God's name is hallowed by their own holy lives. To them apply Ezekiel's words of the passage already quoted, "You will be my people and I will be your God." Christians ask by this petition to reflect God's wholeness-holiness. The second petition, "Thy kingdom come." This petition is not that different from the first. It asks that God's kingship or universal dominion be recognized by all. If God's name, meaning also his very being, is recognized as worthy of honor, adherence, and obedi- ence, then his kingdom comes in the sense in which Jesus sa ,s in Luke 1 7:20,'The kingdom of God is within lou." Luke is careful elsewhere to demon- Ju/ strate that God's kingdom or kingship is neither spa- :,: tial, nor territorial, nor political. His concept of God's.! kingship includes the presence of Jesus among his people, his final coming as supreme judge, and nal dwelling with God for those who kingship and act accordingly. "Give us this day our daily bread," is a request not only for an individual's daily food necessary to sustain human life, but for the whole human coramu" i nity. Because of the unusual Greek expression Luke uses here, this is also a petition for the heavenly ban-.: quet of which the Lucan Jesus spoke at the Last Sup" per, "I will not eat (this passover) again until it filled in the kingdom of God."
