The Message -- for Catholics of Southwestern Indiana July 22,1t Nativity Church members discerning new parish council leade We are writing to let you know... that total Stewardship does work. By PAUL R. LEINGANG Message editor The people of Nativity Church in Evansville are on their way to "becoming full 'TTT' and 'CPC' Stewards and Tithers of their 'Time, Talent . and Treasure' to God, church, "diocese and the poor," accord- , ing to a recent letter. The letter to the office of Stewardship and Development was signed by Father Henry Kuykendall and by the chair- man of the stewardship com- mittee, James Schmitt. The letter reports that the number of parish ministers has increased and that the amount of money pledged for the Catholic Parishes Cam- paign has risen over the past two years. In 1994, for example, 270 of the 289 parish households re- sponded to a request for mem- bership renewal. In the previ- ous year, only 179 had responded. Forty-six percent of the parish members have pledged time and talent for the 1994-95 year, compared with 37 per- cent the previous year. "We are writing to let you know . . . that total Steward- ship does work," the letter stated. "Stewardship allows members to look at their total budget, their total ministry commitment, once a year, and allows them to discern their commitment in a prayerful way as good managers" of time, talent and treasure. Nativity Church commisions all parishoners on Pentecost Sunday. A new parish council is being formed, as "a ministry of service and leadership, united in prayer, which listens, stud- ies, and works to advise the pastor on the vision and direc- tion of the parish." The council members are being selected through a process that began when parishioners were asked to dis- cern how they might give of their time and talent to the parish. Every registered and active member of the parish was en- couraged to pray and recom- mend an adult for membership in the parish council, which will have 10 members. About 60 names of potential leaders were surfaced. Father Steve Lintzenich, from St. Mary Church, Evansville, as- sisted Nativity Church by pro- viding leadership training, and helping the parish to select the members of the new council. The parish council will guide Nativity Church in five areas: Faith Formation, Spiritual Life, Community Outreach, Welcoming/Evangelization, and Finance/Administration. Nativity Church is one of the parishes in the diocese forming or revising a parish council, following the positions adopted by Synod '93. Following is a feature in the Message, designed to help draw together the People of God in southwestern Indiana. Readers are invited to submit information about people who may benefit by some extra prayers and attention. Services for Lorine M. Kiesel, 90, who died July 13, were held July 16 at Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Haub- stadt. She is the mother of Father Leo Kiesel, pastor at St. John Church, Loogootee. Survivors also include her children, Elgene Bell, Elvira Meyer, Benedictine Sister Mary Leon Kiesel, Benedictine Sister Mary Jane Kiesel and Donald Kiesel.
