Father Stephen, 64, was
born June 24, 1929, in
Shenandoah, Pa. -- a coal
mining community.
He professed vows as a
monk at St. Meinrad on April
7, 1957. Since he had been in
construction before coming to
the monastery, he was as-
signed to use his construction
talents as a monk. Among the
projects he supervised were
the construction of the guest
house at St. Meinrad Arch-
abbey, and construction of a
Abbey in California.
Father Stephen was or-
dained a priest in 1972, and
was assigned, to St. Benedict
Church as associate pastor in
1977.
He said concern about his
health was an important fac-
tor in leaving the parish for a
new assignment. Father
Stephen had a heart attack in
1980, open heart surgery with
six bypasses in 1986, and a
detached retina in 1992.
