Daughters of Charity attend General
Assembly in Paris
Sister Catherine Madigan, Visitatrix, and
Sister Julia Huiskamp, Delegate for the East
Central Province, Evansville, attended the
1997 General Assembly of the Daughters of
Charity held May 8 through June 8 at the
Motherhouse in Paris.
There were 183 participants representing
some 26,000 Daughters of Charity on five con-
tinents. Preceding the opening of the assem-
bly, all participated in a six-day retreat.
A worldwide assembly is held every six
years to address important issues concerning
the Daughters of Charity and their ministry
to the poor of the world.
Sister Juana E'lizondo from Spain was re-
elected as Superioress General for a second
six-year term.
Campaign to 'Love them both'
Thirteen churches in southwestern Indi-
ana are cooperating to pay for 20 billboards
depicting a mother and a baby, proclaiming
the pro-life message, "Love them both." Radio
commercials are also part of the campaign
coordinated by the Vanderburgh County
Right to Life.
Cooperating churches include St. John
the Baptist, Newburgh, and St. Benedict,
Corpus Christi, St. Mary, Holy Rosary, St.
John, St. Joseph and Christ the King, all
in Evansville.
Other churches involved are Bible Center
Cathedral, Bethel Temple, First Southern
Baptist Church, Good Shepherd Assembly of
God and Vann Avenue Baptist Church.
Collection scheduled for Latin America
Many parishes in the Diocese of Evansville
will have a second collection July 12 and 13,
for the Catholic Church in Latin America.
Last year, contributions from U.S. Catholics
provided $4.6 million in grants to projects in
22 countries in Central and South America
and the Caribbean islands.
Examples cited by the Secretariat for
Latin America of the National Conference
of Catholic Bishops include helping 200
women from Colombia attend a program of
training in catechesis, bible study and fam-
ily orientation; helping married couples in
Honduras to train in marriage preparation
and natural family planning ministries,
and making it possible for 13 Mayan sis-
ters in Guatemala to continue their forma-
tion and education.
