Bishop appointed
Pope John Paul II has
named Msgr. Blase Cupich as
bishop of Rapid City, S.D. The
announcement was made July
7. Bishop-desibmate Cupich, a
priest of the Archdiocese of
Omaha, Neb., and a former
rector of the Pontifical College
Josephinum in Columbus,
Ohio, will succeed Archbish-
op Charles J. Chaput, who
was named head of the Arch-
diocese of Denver in February
1997.
Named a martyr
The Vatican declared the
martyrdom of a controversial
Croatian cardinal, clearing
the way for his beatification
during Pope John Paul II's
upcoming pastoral visit to
Croatia. Cardinal Alojzije
Stepinac was named a mar-
tyr July 3. Serbs consider the
cardinal a Nazi sympathizer,
while Croat Catholics view
him as a hero.
Bishop installed
Bishop George V. Murry,
new coadjutor for the St.
Thomas Diocese, Virgin
Islands, received a warm and
enthusiastic welcome from
Bishop Elliott G. Thomas at
his June 26 installation Mass
at Sts. Peter and Paul Cath'
dral. As coadjutor, Bishop
Murry automatically becomes
head of the diocese when
Bishop Thomas retires.
Work together'
All Christians must work
together so that the end of
the millennium which saw
the splintering of Christiani-
ty is marked by new efforts
to pardon and seek forgive-
ness, said the ecumenical
Orthodox patriarch, Patri-
arch Bartholomew of Con-
stantinople, in a message to
Pope John Paul II, June 29.
Praises ban
Cardinal Adam J. Maida of
Detroit praised the Michigan
Legislature for its July 2 pas-
sage of a ban on assisted sui-
cide and said the July 4
weekend was an appropriate
time to approve such a ban,
Viagra o.k.
It's the little blue pill every-
body's talking about, and
Catholics shouldn't be red-
faced if they want to try it.
That's the consensus among
Catholic experts regarding
Viagra, the drug that may
answer the prayers of clini-
cally impotent men. accord-
ing to John Dwyer, professor
of theology, New Testament
and church history with St.
Bernard's Institute in the
'Albany' (New.York) Diocese,
