Blase Cupich as bishop of Rapid City, S.D. The announcement was made July 7. Bishop-desibmate Cupich, a priest of the Archdiocese of Omaha, Neb., and a former rector of the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio, will succeed Archbish- op Charles J. Named a martyr The Vatican declared the martyrdom of a controversial Croatian cardinal, clearing the way for his beatification during Pope John Paul II's upcoming pastoral visit to Croatia. Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac was named a mar- tyr July 3. Serbs consider the cardinal a Nazi sympathizer, while Croat Catholics view him as a hero. Bishop installed Bishop George V. Peter and Paul Cath' dral. As coadjutor, Bishop Murry automatically becomes head of the diocese when Bishop Thomas retires. Work together' All Christians must work together so that the end of the millennium which saw the splintering of Christiani- ty is marked by new efforts to pardon and seek forgive- ness, said the ecumenical Orthodox patriarch, Patri- arch Bartholomew of Con- stantinople, in a message to Pope John Paul II, June 29.
