Holy Rosary When Holy Rosary Church was founded in 1950, Green River Road was a chip and seal road through the corn fields, according to Msgr. Mauril- ius Bilski -- known as the founding pastor, the pastor emeritus and the "Mayor of Green River Road." The first church, built in 1951, now houses a book store and some school facilities. The school opened in 1953; an addition was built in 1961. School and parish facilities were expanded again in 1988. The present-day church was completed in 1975. The church location near shopping areas attracts many visitors. Many professionals and middle management persons live in the parish area. Many move to follow jobs and careers. Holy Spirit Holy Spirit Church was founded in 1952, in a ren- ovated riding stable. Father James Hill was the first pastor. A convent-school combination was completed in 1956; the church, in 1962. School enrollment in the early 1960s topped 450. Enrollment was 167 in 1992-93 school year. Several apartment complexes are in the parish. A number of parishioners live in single-parent house- holds. Nativity Nativity Church, established in 1962, is the youngest parish in Evansville. According to a news story in 1968, the parish was the first in the diocese to have a parish council. Father Walden Schiffer was the first pastor. School started in the fall of 1963. It was closed in 1971. Children from the parish now attend many Catholic and public schools. It was established in 1912 on the "'Newburgh Pike" near the Little Sisters of the Poor and the former Poor Clares' monastery. School opened in 1913 -- conducted in a home and at Little Sis- ters, The convent (now "Parish Center") was built in 1914. The "old school" -- v.'ith worship space on the second floor and classroom and sisters' living quarters on the first floor -- was completed in 1914. The church was dedicated in 1928. When school enrollment topped 1,100, the new school was built. It was dedicated in 1953. Today, many in the 2 parish are described as "middle-aged andolder."
