schism or Islamic rule. Some tit-
ular sees, especially those in the
United States, ceased to be
active see cities simply because
of a decision to merge dioceses
or transfer diocesan headquar-
ters to another city.
Several months before the 12
titular sees were announced,
Pope John Paul re-established
Bardstown, Ky., as a titular see
and named retired Auxiliary
Bishop Charles G. Maloney of
Louisville as its first bishop.
Three other former see cities
in the United States also were
resurrected as titular sees --
Natchez, Miss.; Walla Walla,
Wash.; and Allegheny, Pa. Each
is currently headed by an active
U.S. auxiliary bishop.
