12 The Message -- for Catholics of Southwestern Indiana June 1 The time for promises A PROMISE I MAKE Written by Andrew Logan, Mike Moore, Dakota Moon By CHARLIE MARTIN Sung by Dakota Moon Catholic New Service Copyright (c) 1998 by Electra Entertainment Group Girl, you're every breath I take./Oh, baby.D/our love rules every move I make./Oh, baby./And I know that/You can't read my mind./And baby, maybe I CHORUS Don't say it as often as I should/But I really want it to be heard/When I say I love you/That's for good./You have my word/That day after day after alFI will always be true./That's a promise I make to you. You, you take this heart of mine/And make it bet- terdI need you to/Come and walk with me/Through this life/Forever./And I know these words/Are long overdueJAnd baby, maybe I REPEAT CHORUS I may hold you/I may need you/I may want to. REPEAT CHORUS Is a promise of love always a good thing? Let's explore the promises made in Dakota Moon's hit "A Promise I Make." As far as I know this cassingle is Moon's first trip up the charts. The song interested me both because of the group's sound and the question of when to make this kind of promise. The guy in the song is lost in the wonder of infat- uation. When he says "Girl, you're every breath that I take .... your love rules every move I make," I hope his words are just emotional overstatement. Other- wise he has lost his mind! He promises, "When I say I love you that's for good. You have my word that day after day after all I will always be true. That's a promise I make to you." Such a commitment is more like a proposal for marriage. I can't help but wonder if he is genuinely ready to make such promises. Does he have the expe- rience to accurately judge what his current romance means to him? Does he have the emotional maturity and life direction he will need to back up his words? Given his opening words to the girl, it does not seem likely. Emotion is an important part of life, but s r i i;3 it is not the essence of what it means A more aware statement might be whole sense of falling in love with you, sure what to do about it." The girl is now in an awkward s astute enough to realize he is infatuated, hoWi she respond? If she is not ready for he promises, what should she say? She can be both kind and direct. him for the value he places on her. But she als0 to be clear that she is not seeking ar tionship at this time in life. If he accepts her decision, then they can discuss dating. his words are manipulation, a way of into a romance with him. If this is the case, dating immediately. Promises of "forever" only belong in one Both people need to be out of high self-directing. God made a marriage In the context of marriage of love can be fully manifested Recognize the difference between in the emotional rush of infatuation grown and matured, a love ready forever. , Your comments are always welcome.
