WITTING Evansville native celebrates golden jubilee Benedictine Father Martin Witting, a native of Evansville, celebrated his golden jubilee as a Benedictine monk of Marmion Abbey in Aurora, lll. with a Mass of Thanksgiving on May 30. His brother and sister-in-law, John and Marian Witting of Evansville, joined him for his ju- bilee celebration. He attended St. Benedict School and St. Meinrad Minor Seminary and made his profes- sion of vows as a Benedictine monk on Sept. 15, 1946, at St. Meinrad Abbey. In 1947, he became a founding member of the new Marmion Abbey. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 19, 1951. In 1965, he entered active duty in the Chaplains' Corps of the U.S. Navy, serving in Viet Nam, Japan, Italy and aboard an aircraft carrier. He was also the Senior Chaplain at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. He served 26 years in the Navy and rose to the rank of Captain. He is currently the chaplain and an instructor of theology at Marmion Academy.
