Celine Dion Copyright (c) 1975 by Eric Carmen Music Inc., adm. by Songs of PolyGram Int Inc. (BMI) 1996, Sony Music Entertainment By CHARLIE MARTIN CNS COLUMNIST I Loneliness. What helps to ease its pain? Celine Dion's "All By Myself' is all about loneliness. Off her immensely popular "Falling Into You" disc, the cassingle was origi- nally released by '70's pop star Erie Carmen. In the song, a woman recognizes some painful facts about her current life. She says that "when I was young, I never needed-anyone." At least that's how she felt then. But now she thinks "of all the friends I've known," and when she dials "the tele- phone, nobody's home." She sings about sometimes feeling "so distant and insecure." She longs for loves that are now "dis- tant and obscure" to become her "cure." This woman may need a new attitude if she is to make connections that last. Her youthful choice to appear independent kept others on the peripheqT of her life. Yet this can be changed. By acting in a new and different way, she can establish lasting bonds of love with others. But the love I speak of here is not necessarily romantic love. In fact, friendship often is more able to build long-term connections than is romance, with all its passion. Friendships usually form around common interests. You meet people by being in the same class, or by participating in the school band, or by belonging to the same church youth group. Howev- er, for a friendship to become a ] more is needed. Deeper bonds form when two peopl, enough to share personal thoughts this to happen, each person must know tha she will be listened to. In other words, show others that you c e: enough to really listen. Availability is another important ing friendship. People need each share the delight of success or to face failure together. Sometimes this to quickly altering your schedule. This shouldn't happen all the time. the friendship has developed into dependency. However, there need to be you put all else aside for a friend and go him or her. The song makes no.mention in our lives. Yet, God's friendship is through all kinds of ups and downs, loneliest times. While learning how to make life-10ng count on your Creator as a source care. When you are open t may still encounter loneliness. But the by myself' will no longer be yours.
