LEINGANG Message editor I i ,:,,! MSGR. CARL SHETLER May 31, 1947. His first assignment was assistant pastor at St. There- sa, Evansville, and teaching at Memorial High School. In 1949, he was appointed to teach at Mater Dei High School, Evansville. Among parishes he served as an assistant pastor were St. Agnes and St. Anthony in Evans- ville; St. John, Loogootee, and St. Simon, Washington. In 1954, he was appointed pas- tor of St. Joseph, Bramble, and St. Michael, Davies County; in 1957, he became pastor of St. Mary Church, Ireland. Subsequent assignments as pastor included St. Mary, Evansville, in 1970, and Msgr. Carl Shetler will celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of his ordi- nation, with a special Mass at St. Martin Church, Whitfield, on Sun- day, June 1, at 11 a.m. Lunch and a reception will follow the Mass at the small church where a large tent will be set up to accommodate the large crowd that is expected. Msgr. Shetler will retire, also on June 1, but he expects to con- tinue some priestly work after retirement. Among the possibil- ities for his continuing ministry are presiding at Mass on week- ends and working with individ- uals and families. After 50 years of service to parishes and schools in the Dio- cese of Evansville, Msgr. Shetler plans to move into an apartment in Jasper. As for his ministry, he said he will wait to see what plans develop to serve the people of the Washington Deanery. Father Gre- gory Spencer, currently the pas- tor of St. Joseph, Bramble, and St. Mary, Shoals, is leaving the dio- cese this summer. Msgr. Shetler's retirement and Father Spencer's departure will leave the deanery with six priests for 12 parishes. Msgr. Shetler was born Dec. 28, 1922, and was ordained a priest ,Ib JASPER ] I{Y' LOW LUMBER CO.
