Along with teaching adherents of Matthew's type of Judaism, much of which evolved into later Christianity, there was to be an initiation,".., bap- tizing them, etc." Baptism, an external washing sym- bolizing the cleansing that comes from internal repentance or change of direction, was to be the initi- ation. Although other Jewish groups of the time may have practiced various kinds of baptisms, Christian baptism is a direct descendant of the baptis 1 required by and administered by John the Baptist and his disciples, but with a difference. John said, "I baptize you with water .... He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire." Luke will portray the fire in his Pentecost scene. Matthew never develops the "fire" of John the Baptist's promise. Baptism is to be not in the name of Jesus, as it seems to have been in some primitive Christian com- munities, but in the name of Father, Son, and Spirit. Both St. Paul and the Gospels speak of God as Father, Jesus as his Son, and the Spirit of God under various names, but this is the first time all three are brought together in this form in the New Testament. Matthew never develops the meaning of baptism into or in the name of the Trinity. That is left to later the- ology, which speaks of intimate union of the baptized -ith God as Father, Son, and Spirit. The letters of Paul and the Gospel of John played a large role in this development. Perhaps the words of Paul in II Corinthians 13:14 begin to express the privilege of those baptized in the name of the Trinity: "The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all." They are the parents of eight children: Betty Herr of Chandler, Jerome Anslinger of Wadesville, Rita Schnur of Newburgh, Eugene Anslinger of Evansville, Con- nie Taylor of Wadesville, and Diane Stone, Marcia Jochem and Ruth Richmond, all of Evansville. They have 16 grand- children. Mr. Anslinger is retired from the U.S. Postal Ser-" vice. Mrs. Anslinger is a homemaker. Golden Jubilarians Sylvester and Marie (Daunhauer) Boeglin of Hnntingburg will celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary with a Mass of Thanksgiving at 10 a.m. May 25 at St. Mary Church, Hunt- ingburg. A dinner for the immedidate family and invited guests will be followed by an Open House from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Reflections in Huntingburg. The couple requests no gifts. They were married May 27, 1947, at St. Ferdinand Church, Ferdinand. TheY are the parents of six children: Kenneth Boeglin, St. Henry; Mary Pund, Jasper; Leroy Boeglin, Mariah Hill; Randy Boeglin, Huntingburg; Gera. lyn Jochem, St. Henry, and Donna Farley, Huntingburg.
