At that time, the community will elect a Secretary of the Election, four Tellers (who look at and count the ballots), and will complete the necessary paper- work. Dan Staublin, 814 Jefferson Street, Tell City, IN 47588 • 83 professed monks are el- igible to be elected as abbot as indicated by the following cri- teriai the monk must by 35 years old; he must be professed 5 years; he must be a priest • There is NO election until one monk receives the neces- sary number of votes: -- in the first three rounds, a monk must receive two- thirds of the votes; in rounds four and on, the monk must receive a sim- ple majority (one over half). • The ballots are read aloud so that all members know who received how many votes. After each vote the ballots are care- fully set aside to be shredded and burned when the election is completed. • The monks will have nine ballots in which to elect their abbot. If no one is elected by the ninth ballot, the Abbot- President will appoint a monk from Saint Meint ad or another monastery to serve as adminis- trator for the community for one year. This has never hap- pened at Saint Meinrad. • Once someone received the necessary number of votes, the Abbot-President announces that there has been an "elec- tion." He then asks that person if he would accept the election. I IIII Main Street Pharmacy 217 E. Main St. o Downtown Waslngton Phone: 254-5141 -...I=i.-,[. -.--,,,m +sm .mm+.',,m-,. The monk has the right to refuse the election. If a monk who received the requisite number of votes refuses elec- tion, the election process be- gins again, with the possibility of another nine ballots. • If he does accept, he imme- diately becomes the new abbot, and assumes authority of the monastic community immedi- ately. • The ringing of the Church bells announces the election of the new abbot. The monks renew their pledge of obedi- ence to their new abbot. • Within three months of the abbatial election, the new abbot will be "blessed," which is the official Catholic Church recognition of this man's selec- tion as abbot. • Abbots serve at their own discretion, until they resign from or die in office. • The format for the election of an abbot has been tradi- tional since medieval times. The election process follows Canon Law, which makes sure, for instance, there is no coer- don or collusion before or dur- ing the election. The process is very similar to the election of a pope. • Monastic communities take seriously the election of their superior, and Saint Mein- rad is no different. Guidance on what qualities to seek in an abbot can be found Chapter 64 of the Rule of St. Benedict. • Through this process, the monks at Saint Meinrad will be electing the 8th abbot of Saint Meinrad (the fifth Arch- abbot).
