0 The Message -- for Catholics of Southwestern Indiana i Magic of Words May 17, 1991 By FATHER JOSEPH L. ZILIAK ! Associate Publisher Where do you gather ideas that make your life richer? How do you keep adding to your storehouse of wisdom and knowledge? My technique is fairly simple. I try to listen to people -- to their words and then the actions. I then attempt to analyse what significance these may have. I read all sorts of things. I read news notes, trade journals, ads, Catholic and secular newspapers and magazines. I purchase books, but don't always read them from cover to cover. I usually skim and pick. I watch television, usually beginning with the late evening news and generally watch news rather exclusively. I try to attend workshops and seminars of various types throughout the year. Conventions are another source of information and a good time to obtain a feel for movements and ideas floating around a wide area of the country. Friends, co-workers, committees, board members and people on the street all add to my storehouse of information and interpretation of 25 Continued from page 1 Christ the King Church, Evansville, Father Robert Deig. In this context, I'll pass on several paragraphs of details picked up from a newsletter produced by the Gerontology Center of the University of Evansville. How would you respond to this question? Do family members or friends play a more significant role in your general life satisfaction? The answer is not a totally simple one. Fami- ly and friends usually play differing roles in our lives. The family is without a doubt the most im- portant support system for us. At the same time, friends seem to have a greater impact on our day- to-day morale, that is, our satisfaction in life. The reason this is true is that we probably have a wider selection basis for friends, and thus we can pick and choose those with common in- terests. We might find that we spend more time (either face to face or by phone contact} with such friends. Beyond that our relationship with friends is that of peers, namely, of equals, which is not al- ways the case with family. Second bit of wisdom. Couples generally get along better after they have finished the child rearing period of their lives. Several fac- tors make this a reasonable situation. There is generally more financial freedom after the kids have left home. Parents no longer have to be such strong role models. The couple has more time to spend together. There is less tension and stress in the household. Couples can relate on a more equal basis. And finally, the spouses may rediscover one another. These thoughts may not shift the balance Of the world, but spend a little time with them this week. Try them on for size. See if they fit your interpretation of your life. Golden Jubilarians Othmar J. and Rose {Wagner) Leisman of St. Anthony will celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary with a Mass of Thanksgiving at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 25, at St. Anthony Church, St. Anthony. Their children will. host an Open House until 5 p.m. at St. Anthony American Legion. The couple re- quests no gifts. They were married May 24, 1941, at St. An- thony Church. They have three sons, Bob of Omaha, Ne., Gene of Schnellville and Kenny of St. Anthony; three daugh- ters, Jane Bohnert of Jasper, Ann Lange of Vincennes and Marilyn Heidorn of Huntingburg; 13 grandchildren, and a great-grandson. He retired from Jasper Desk Co. after 39 years; She worked at the St. Anthony School cafeteria for 24 years. Please patronize Message advertisers! Hi-Tech Sheet Metal Inc.
