Madam Zola says Cards,
Yankees bucking the stars
May 13, 1988

I stepped through the low-arched front door
and through the matted, burgundy beads that hung
from the foyer ceiling. It was like the back room in
Bogart's Club Americain in "Casablanca."
The room was dimly lit and smelled of old
books, incense and sneakers.
I had entered Madame Zola's House of
Astrology, Tarot Cards, Palm Readings and
Aluminum Siding.
Somebody had to get to the bottom of this
situation. If Nancy Reagan was deciding what day
to invade Grenada based on whether Jupiter was
properly aligned with Mars, there must be
something deeply meaningful about this business.
(As an American citizen, I was glad the president
was getting advice from SOMEBODY. For a while
there, I though he was just making up foreign
policy minute-to-minute. But now I realize there's
a grand cosmic design to the thing and I certainly
do feel better knowing this.)
But back to the point. I was determined to find
out how it might be affecting the world of sports.
Tell me, Madame Zola, do you do readings for
anyone important?
"Don Mattingly come here and seems like he
somebody important, although I'm not quite sure
what he does," she said. "A regular customer and
sweet boy. Yes, he was born on April 20. He's a
Taurus on the cusp of Aries. Very strong minded
and aggressive, but with a hint of spiritual
vulnerability. This makes him susceptible to
sliders from lefthanders.., especially after the
All-Star break. He was born in 1960 which is
another borderline year. Five days after the day in

1865 that Mr. Lincoln had that unpleasantness at
Ford's Theater. I told Don never to buy a Ford."
What do the signs say about Mattingly being
in the World Series this year? I asked.
"What's the World Series?"
Never mind, I said, it's just something that
happens in October.
"Well, the success of an early-month Taurus is
clouded in early October by the confluence effects
of a late-developing Taurus -- looks like someone
born on May 16. This second Taurus indicates the
combined cross-currents of violent storms, fist
fights and topless bars."
Yes, I said, that's Billy Martin, all right.
"And then there's always the influence of the
Independence Day Cancer."
Who?
"Born on July 4. I can't quite make out the
name but it's something like Stulebrynner, or
Stimebummer."
Think I can guess on that one. So, what's the
problem with this Cancer?
"As with all Cancers, they are basically
selfish, self-centered types with a strong affinity
for the good life. Attila the Hun was a Cancer. Be-
in 8 close to them is like slow-dancing with a por-
cupine. It's a risky proposition. Independence Day
Cancers aren't crazy, but they make almost
everyone around them loony. So, I wouldn't count
on these Tauruses being in a good frame of mind
when October comes around."
Doesn't sound good for the Yankees.
How about closer to home? What if I were the
manager of a baseball team and my birthday was

Nov. 9?
"Ah yes, a Scorpio, You say this is a baseball
question? You sure this guy doesn't work on
'General Hospital?" I could give a much clearer
answer in that case."
No, baseball is what I'm wondering about.
"OK, Nov. 9. Yes, it's coming into much
clearer focus now. He must build success on ag-
gressiveness and attention to small details. He
prefers fast to slow in most details of his business.
He likes to hit-and-run with less than two strikes.
He does his best thinking in a fishing boat and his
hair leeks like dirty snow. Am I close?"
Yep, I said. That's Whitey Herzog.
"Never heard of him. But I must tell you that
the success of Whitey person is seriously jeopar-
dized by another Scorpio; this one borfl on Nov.
16. They are situated in the zodiac in such a con-
fluence that the terminal nexes indicate detrimetal
relationships. This other Scorpio is a physician
from New York."
A physician from New York?
"Sure, Dec Gooden. But all is not lost."
How's that?
"Well, this Scorpio named Herzog will surely
succeed this year beyond his wildest dreams, ex-
cept for that one minor exception to the
astrological perfection of his star system. Just one
glitch that could throw all the forecast out of
kilter. But it's so minor that I hesitate to even
bring it up."
Yeah, what's that?
"This guy doesn't run a team from Missouri,
does he? This is a very bad year for Missouri."
