i! 6 The Message -- for Catholics of Southwestern Indiana Jesus is glorified: A new comman BY FATHER DONALD DILGER Columnist Gospel Commentary for May 10, 1998: Fifth Sun- day of Easter: Cycle C: John 13:31-33a, 34-35 Even though the liturgy at this time celebrates the resurrection of Jesus, today's gospel takes us back to the Last Supper version of the Gospel of John. While in the other gospels Jesus says very little at the Last Supper, in the Gospel of John the words of Jesus at the Last Supper take up most of five chapters of this gospel. The context of this Sunday's gospel: Jesus announces to the disciples that one of them would betray him. There is a brief dialogue between Peter and "the one whom Jesus loved." The latter was next to Jesus. Peter decides that this unnamed disciple ought to be able to get more specific information, which he does. The culprit is Judas. Jesus said to Judas; "What you do, do quickly," and Judas leaves the table and the room. John adds ominously, "And it was night." At this point our reading for today begins with a somewhat confusing statement, "Now is the Son of man glorified and in him God is glorified. If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him immediately." Note that according to this statement the glorification of Jesus, his transition to a state of glory, is happening at that moment. This seems rather peculiar since he is still seated at table. The long Last Supper discourse is yet to come, as are his arrest, his trial, his death by crucifixion, and the resurrection. We tend to think of the resurrection of Jesus as his glorification. This is however not the the- ology of the Gospel of John. The whole process of glorification begins already at the Last Supper. In fact, John already notes in 12:23, when Jesus is approached by interested pagans, that "the hour has come for the Son of man to be glorified." In responses to their visit Jesus speaks of his crucifixion as his glorification. John therefore does not depict Jesus in agony at any time in the passion narrative, not even on the cross, his throne of glory. Jesus' transition to a state of glory is the vindica- tion or proof df the authenticity of his mission. In the Gospel of John, chapters four through six, Jesus had repeatedly spoken of his mission; "to do the will of my Father." Now that his mission is accomplished, he can justly say, "In him (the Son of man) God is glori- fied," meaning his Father's glory, his will, his attrib- utes, his love for humanity, all are made known through the completion of Jesus' mission. Jesus refers to himself as "Son of man," a term used of him in all four gospels. This term is derived from Daniel 7: 13- 14, where "one like a sonof man," approaches God and receives dominion and glory and a kingdom that will last forever." That "son of man" figure in Daniel was a symbol of an empire of the Jews who had been oppressed and enslaved by other empires for cen- turies. Daniel dates from 165 B.C. As time moved on, and such a kingdom or empire did not develop, interpreters had to find a more realistic application of this statement in Daniel. By the end of the first century B.C. the hypothesis had developed that this "son of man" or human being had a deeper meaning than its symbolism in Daniel. By this time interpreters of Scripture thought of the "son of man" as a historic individual, a messi- ah, a savior of his people, a king. The next step in this trajectory is taken by Christian interpreters, when they apply this term to Jesus as the ultimate meaning of the passage in Daniel. In the history of interpreta- tion of the Scriptures human beings attempt to find the word of God or divinely revealed truths which are conveyed som words and historical circumstances arise. When a scriptural thing fails to happen, e.g. Mark's return of Jesus, a mistake was has to be reinterpreted until the true found.
