St. Boniface Church, Evansville
Parish planning for St. Boniface Church
began in 1878. Father William Bultman
was appointed the first pastor in 1880. A
twin-towered brick structure quickly re-
place the first temporary flame building
completed in 1881.
Fire destroyed the church on Easter
morning in 1902, but rebuilding began al-
most immediately, with help from the Ger-
man Catholic Central Society.
German culture is still an important part
of the current parish description, as is "West Side spirit.". Many
members are elderly, retirees, and middle class. The Westside

St. Matthew Church was established with
the construction of a church-school combi-
nation building in 1857, but priests visited
the area as far back as 1840, according to
the parish history. A'new church was built
in 1880. School records date back to 1861
when J. Weiss taught in a private home.
The parish population currently is mo-
bile and tends to be young or middle aged.
Most parishioners have a high school edu-
cation, many have professional and college
degrees.
Parish organizations include Youth, Women's Club, Men's
Club, Scouts, CYO, School Parents' Association, St. Vincent de
Paul, Bereavement Group and Cursillo.

Priests visited the St. Philip area as
early as 1830.
Early plans far a log church did not pan
out, but under the guidance of Father
Roman Weinzapfel, the first church at St.
Philip was built in 1847. A school was
opened in 1851.
The new church, built of bricks made on
the parish grounds with clay from the sur-
rounding area, was completed in 1859.
The parish today is stable and experi-
encing growth. It has people of diverse ages, diverse income
and diverse education -- ranging from less than high school to
professional. People are very generous with their time and talent, according to the parish profile.

A log church was built at St. Wendel
Church in 1842, and replaced by a new
church in 1854. The parish encompasses por-
tions of two counties -- Vanderburgh and
Posey. The first school, built in 1844, strad-
dled the county line. A new school was built
in 1958.
