Evansville West . I i i i U.S. Census, parish profiles, diocesan census, tell the Sacred Heart Church, Evansville, has the smallest land area in the Evansville West Deanery. Holy Angels Church, New Harmony, the parish with the smallest number of persons registered, has the largest area. There are 13 parishes in the deanery. Holy Redeemer and St. Theresa churches have the most families. Information has been gathered from several sources: the 1990 U.S. Cen- sus data, a diocesan census, and parish profiles. The primary purpose of gathering such information is to im planning, according to Holy Names Sister Louise Bond, diocesan The report on the Evansville West Deanery is the second in a ports. The Newburgh Deanery was featured in the Special Synod Message published in April. The five remaining deaneries will be one each month, in the issues of the Message leading up to the Synod in November. Corpus Christi Church, Evansville Corpus Christi Church was founded in 1955. The combina- tion school and gymnasium style church was completed in 1957. The convent and the rectory, completed in the 1960s, were de- signed and built by the men and women of the parish. Father James J. O'Connor was the first pastor. Among the active organizations today are Women's Club, Men's Club, Scouts, School Parents Association, St. Vincent de Paul and Cursillo. For many years, Mass was celebrated once a month, or at times only on the fifth Sunday of the month. The building was not used at all during World War II. Father James Rogers was appointed pastor in 1946, and the mission church was made a parish in 1948. The parish hosts many visitors in historic New Harmony, a popular tourist area. Several parish- ioners are involved in the arts, and the area offers many arts and cultural events. Many parishioners worl at a nearby General Electric plant. Father Lawrence Moll was the first pastor. A gymnasium style church was completed in 1960. The new church was dedicated in April 1992.
