2 The Message -- for Catholics of Southwestern Indiana May 1, Jubilee 2000 a beginning not an end Newbu,'gh parish to market T-shirts nationwide " ' By RICK JILLSON Special to the Message During the next year and a half, plenty of T-shirts will pop up in refer- ence to the new millennium. Some, no doubt, will warn that "the end is near." In sharp contrast, Pope John Paul II has declared the year 2000 a new beginning. Specifically, the Pope has decreed 2000 an official "jubilee year," during which all Christians will be asked to focus on Christ and the sal- vation he offers in this diverse world. To help spread the word about the Jubilee, the National Jubilee 2000 Headquarters has given the Spiritual Life Committee of St. John the Baptist Church in Newburgh permission to -L market T-shirts, sport shirts and sweatshirts that celebrate the occasion. In fact, St. John will serve as homebase for an eventual nationwide shirt dis- tribution. Some time in the next week, pack- ets detailing the Jubilee shirts, com- plete with order forms, will be mailed :: to every Catholic parish in Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri and Ohio. Also, within the next two weeks, Jubilee 2000 information will be added to the St. John the Baptist website (http://www.SJBNewburgh.org). The handsome white Jubilee 2000 shirts feature a colorful and power- fully symbolic Jubilee crest. It consists of a Greek cross inscribed in a circular blue field that symbolizes the universe and the need for solidarity, along with five doves that, together with the cross, signify God entering into human history and redeeming it. A light coming from the center reminds us that joy and peace are integral facets of Christianity. The custom of the jubilee dates back to a time before Christ. According to the Law of Moses, every seventh year was to be dedicated in a special way to God and every 50th year was marked by a major jubilee celebration. In 1996, The pope unveiled his plans for a "great jubilee year" in 2000. In preparation, Catholics were called to focus on Jesus Christ in 1997, the Holy Spirit in 1998 and God the Father dur- ing 1999. Bishop Gerald A. Gettelfinger and Father Joseph Ziliak meet ing the T-shirt, spiritual life coordinator at St. John the and Judy Braun, left, who originated the idea of becoming the Jubilee 2000 T-shirts. _,.,,tn by fll ' -- Message " FC00R SHERIFF "'There's a world of difference between the city io, /ice department and the sheriff's department.
