REFRAIN She's a brick,/And I'm drowning slowly./Off the coast,/And I'm headed nowhere./She's a brick,/And I'm drowning slowly. They call her name at 7:30EI pace around the park- ing lotdThen I walk down/To buy her flowers/And sell some gifts that I got./Can't you see/It's not me you're dying for?/Now she's feeling more alone/Than she ever has before. (REPEAT REFRAIN) As the weeks went by/It showed that she was not finedThey told me, son,/It's time to tell the truth/She broke down,/And I broke down/'Cause I was tired of lying./Driving home to her apartment/For the moment we are alone/She's alone./I'm alonedNow I know it. (REPEAT REFRAIN) Written by B. Folds/D. Jessee Sung by Ben Folds Five Copyright (c) 1997 by Sony Music Entertainment Inc. Ben Folds Five's chart hit "Brick" may be an account of the emotional turmoil a young couple feels as a result of an abortion. Both individuals in the song feel isolated and hurt. The guy in the song is "numb" as he drives to his girlfriend's apartment• There "she is balled up on the couch." The girl's "mom and dad went down to Charlotte," so "they're not home to find us out." As they "drive" -- to the abortion clinic, I presume -- the guy realizes, "Now that I have found someone, I'm feeling more alone than I ever have before." The song suggests to me that the decision to have an abortion was costly to each individual's emotional and spiritual health. In the song's words, "as the weeks went by, it showed that she was not fine." In fact, "she broke down, and I broke down, cause I was tired of lying." Guilt and deception can leave anyone emotional- ly broken. Even their caring about each other does not get them through the trauma that they feel: "She's °. jii alone, I'm alone, now I know it." The song does not tell or if they did. What it does reveal is caused by the decision. Unfortunately some teens do changes brought on by a pregnancy for teens to face. The church teaches that at answer. In such situations I frequently adoption• Conception has little parent. Writer-direc- tor Mike .van Diem turns a fair- ly conventional mystery story into a compelling character study of a bright but inexperi- enced youth who tries to over- come the stigma of his birth and impoverished upbringing, then comes to fear his vengeful father is out to ruin his chances of success, until the ending clar- ifies matters.
