2 The Message -- for Catholics of Southwestern Indiana Magic of Words By FATHER JOSEPH ZILIAK Associate Publisher Unconditional love. How do we learn what that means? Unconditional love is precisely what the words say, namely, I love you. Period. For instance, if we should say, "I love you if you pick up your dirty clothes and put them in the clothes hamper," we are making our promise of love conditioned by obedience to our demands. The conditions that we lay down may be as varied as life itself. But we do indeed often place conditions that will make another person love- able to us. If you do not smoke in the house, I will invite you over. If you keep yourself clean and sweet smelling, I will enjoy being in your company. If your language is not gross and improper, I will re- spond in a friendly manner to you. If you show no signs of excess in drinking al- coholic beverages, I will invite you to parties. If you have good connections, I will keep you on my list of acquaintances. If you can reciprocate, I will invite you to a dinner at my house. God's u :bnditional love: Applying it in our lives If you seem to have sufficient money and in- come, I will encourage my child to continue see- ing your child. If we receive sufficient publicity, I will engage in public-minded activity. If you are popular and do well in your stud- ies, I will speak to you in the halls and malls. If you are good in athletics, I will accept you as person of accomplishments. If you keep your yard and house as neatly and trimly as I, I will speak to you over the back fence and invite you to cookouts. If you match my gifts with your gifts to me, I will continue to be gift-giving to you. If you promise to support me in my projects, I will give time and energy to yours. If you give me expensive jewelry and an open credit allowance, I will be a very loving spouse. If you respond to me physically, I will be generous to all your desires. Problem. If we live our lives -- with chil- dren, with spouses, with friends, with co-work- ers, with neighbors, with people on the street in such a conditioned fashion, how will we ex" perience and know that God loves us with an unconditioned love? What we are experiencing this week is that our God sent his only son, Jesus, to see to it that we could be at peace and joy forever. We are a. redeemed people. We live in a redeemed world.. All this because of the overhwleming love o fthls tremendous lover, Jesus. The divine action comes first. The com- pelling invitation is for us to respond to such love that knows no bounds, that knows no con- ditions. We are freely invited to respond freely to the love of our God. It can be done. Jesus shows us the way. We can pass on the same insight and mode of living to others -- to our children, our spouses, ourb friends, our neighbors, those who work side" Y" side with us, and those that we meet only in a passing manner. God loves us with an unconditioned love' Let us incorporate such a love in our daily hie.
