A retreat in Gibson County Second graders from the four Catholic schools in Gibson Coun- ty met recently for a retreat at St. James School, St. James. Participating schools included Sts. Peter and Paul, Haub- stadt; St. Joseph School, Princeton; Holy Cross, Fort Branch, and St. James. The children, all members of First Communion classes, made bread, ate lunch together, played ice breaker games, and attended a prayer service. JoAnn Layman, principal at St. James, said the retreat was designed to let the children "real- ize that other children besides them are also making their First Communions." After they watched the movie "Grandma's Bread," the students made loaves of bread, placing an egg in the middle of their dough. "The egg symbolizes new life," explained Karen Stewart, Sts. Peter and Paul principal. At the end of the day, the chil- dren attended a prayer service together. "We commissioned them, and sent them forth with their bread," Stewart said.
