Symp- toms may include eating and sleeping disorders, guilt, de- pression, grief, flashbacks, anniversary reactions, and the need for reconciliation. "Abortion carries the penalty of excommunication in the church. This program is important, because about 1,000 women in this area a year are obtaining abortions and their relationships with God and with their church have been completely sev- ered. It is important for the church to reach out to them. It's always been the role of the church to reach out to the wounded." They will have dreams of children, of a child with its arms open saying 'mommy.' They become jittery at the sound of vacuum cleaners, because the sound reminds them of the suction machine at the abortion clinic. "Finally, there is accep- tance. They come to the point where they have to say good bye to the child. They may write a letter to say good bye or they may go through a fu- neral process. They may go to the cemetery or do a mock burial for the child. They may have a memorial service." Halterman said many times women experience anxiety at- they do not make the connec- tion with their abortion expe- rience. "Women have experi- enced as long as a 15-year delayed reaction to their abortion experience. They block it out as if it never hap- pened until some trauma ally stressful happens in their life. Then the memory sur- faces and they have a feeling of the need for forgiveness. That's where reconciliation from the church comes in. "What they need to know is that they are forgiven by the church and by God." ii Rachel mourns her children; she refuses to be consoled because her children are no more. Thus says the Lord: Cease your cries of mourning. Wipe the tears from your eyes. The sorrow you have shown shall have its reward. There is hope for your future.
