LEINGANG Message editor If you count the people, the biggest parish in the Newburgh Deanery is St. John Church in Newburgh. If you measure "biggest" by the size of the area, then the biggest parish by far is St. Clement Church in Boonville. The information for such comparisons comes from the 1990 census. Within the boundaries of St. John Church are 21,773 people That is the total of all persons, Catholics and all others. St. Clement is close be- hind in total population, with 18,854. St. Clement covers 217.3 square miles. That's a bigger area than all the other parishes in the deanery combined. The Newburgh Deanery includes five parishes: St. John, Newburgh; St. Rupert, Red Brush; St. l]ernard. Rockport; St. Martin, Chrisney, and St. Clement, Boonville. The deanery includes Warrick and a portion of Spencer counties, with a total area of 391.3 square miles. The primary purpose of gathering data on parishes and deaneries is to improve diocesan planning, according to Holy Names Sister Louise Bond, diocesan chancellor. Most parishes in the diocese have completed a census, according to Sister Louise. All parishes filled out Parish Profiles, providing informa- tion about staff size and other pertinent facts, she said. Among the facts derived from the 1990 U.S. Census are these: The total population of the deanery is 46,900. :: The area served by St. John Church has the most people per mile, 590. Women in the deanery area slightly outnumber men, 51.8 49.2 percent. Of the five parishes, St. John Church has the highest number dren under five, and from five to 17 years of age. Of the five parishes, St. Clement Church has the highest people 65 and older. The population is almost all White, 99.2 percent of the lation. A large majority of the people live in family households, 91.2 of the deanery population. Information on the specifically Catholic population is derived from parish census and from the Parish Profiles. There are two parish schools in the deanery, at St. John and St. All parishes have religious education programs, with the largest at SL (with more than 500 students) and St. Clement (with more than 300 students).
