The Message -- for Catholics of Southwestern Indiana .Years of Service "- 16 teachers will be honored at Teacher of the Year banquet B MARY ANN HUGHES Message staff writer Sixteen teachers from schools throughout the Diocese of Evans- ville will be honored for their years of service to Catholic schools during the annual Teacher of the Year banquet April 29. "It's difficult to find the words to show our heartfelt appreciation for 20, 30 and 40 years of services that these teachers and adminis- trators have given to our diocese," said Phyllis Bussing, diocesan director of ,schools. "These men and women have shared their lives with the young people in our schools. It is fitting, indeed, that we honor them at our celebration banquet which hon- ors teachers for their hard work • and dedication. A principal and a teacher will be honored for 40 years of service. • Benedictine Sister Christine Kempf is the principal at St. Matthew School, Mount Vernon. She began her teaching career in the diocese in 1957, when she taught first grade at St. Joseph School, Evansville. From 1962 to 1967, she taught first grade at Holy Rosary School, Evansville. She spent one school year, 1967 to 1968, at Holy Cross School, Fort Branch, and from 1968 to 1970, she taught and served as princi- pal at St. Francis Xavier School, Poseyville. She was principal for the next three years at Holy Spirit School, Evansville, and she spent the next 17 years, 1974 to 1991, as principal at St. Theresa School, Evansville. In 1991, she became principal at St. Matthew School. • Mildred Rueger's first job was at St. Benedict School, Evans- ville, in 1957. She taught at St. Joseph School, Evansville, from 1959 to 1968, and then spent two years at Holy Rosary School, Evansville. She spent 26 years at St. There- sa School, Evansville, where she is oanotly the fifth grade teacher. Five teachers will be honored for 30 years of service: • Stella Bennett is a first grade teacher at Holy Family School, Jasper, She began teaching there in 1968. In 1996, she received the dioce- san Teacher of the Year award. • Sharon Fink teaches third grade at St. Joseph School, Van- derburgh County. She began teaching there in 1968. • Charles Kiesel teaches fifth grade at St. Joseph School, Princeton. From 1968 to 1973, he was a member of the faculty at St. John School, Vincennes. He joined the faculty in Princeton in 1973. • Richard Keith has served at Mater Dei High School, Evans- ville, since 1968. He teaches algebra. ,, Barbara Luig teaches fourth grade at Resurrection School, Evansville. She began her teaching career at St. Theresa School, Evansville, in 1968. In 1969, she joined the fac- ulty at Holy Cross School, Fort Branch, and from 1970 to 1986, she taught at St. Matthew School, Mount Vemon. She began teaching at Resur- rection in 1986. Nine teachers will complete 20 years of service at the end of this school year. • Roiann Andrews teaches business and accounting at Memorial High School, Evans- ville. She joined the Memorial fac- ulty in 1978. • Diane Burkhart teaches sec- ond grade at Westside Catholic Consolidated Intermediate School, Evansville. She joined the WCCS faculty in 1978. • Ann Friedman is the princi- pal at St. Wendel School, St. Wen- del. She began teaching in the dio- cese in 1977, when she joined the staff at St. Joseph School, Prince- ton. She joined the faculty at St. Wendel in 1985. • Nancy Kluesner teaches sec- • ond grade at Precious Blood School, Jasper. She has been a member of Precious Blood's fac- ulty since 1978. • Kathy Schmitt teaches sew enth and eighth grade science at Holy Rosary School, Evansville. She joined the Holy Rosary facul- ty in 1977. • Ruth Ann Scott teaches first grade at St. Philip School, Posey County. She began her teaching career at St. Philip in 1975. From 1981 to 1983, she taught at Holy Spirit School, Evansville. She returned to St. Philip School in 1983. • Roger Sills began his teaching career at Memorial High School, Evansville, in 1977. He now teaches art at Mater Dei High School, Evansville. He joined the Mater Dei faculty in 1981. • Carl Voegel joined the staff at Mater Dei High School, E;ans- ville, during the 1977-1978 school year. He teaches biology and anato- my. • Ann Whelan teaches fifth grade at St. Wendel School. St. Wendel. She joined the St. Wendel facul- ty in 1978.
