12 The Message -- for Catholics of Southwestern Indiana U.S. dioceses using many resources in millennium p By CHRISTOPHER GUNTY Catholic News Service ROSEMONT, Ill. -- For most dioceses, the celebration of their 150th anniversary would be a big deal. But for the Diocese of Savan- nah, Ca., and the Archdiocese of Seattle, their 150th anniver- saries will be superseded by something bigger -- the jubilee year 2000. Savannah and Seattle, both established in 1850, will dove- tail their dioceses' sesquicen- tennial celebrations with cele- brations of the new millennium. The Diocese of Savannah has created booklets in English and Spanish for parish groups. The diocese also plans special cele- brations each year to highlight themes in preparation for the millennium, including youth gatherings, annual parish cele- brations and diocesan and dean- ery celebrations. In Seattle, plans call for litur- gical celebrations in the oldest parish in each deanery in 1999, followed in 2000 by celebrations in the newest parish in each deanery. Seattle and Savannah were just two of the dioceses, arch- dioceses and national organiza- tions represented at a convoca- tion on "Preparing for the Jubilee Year 2000," sponsored in suburban Chicago Rosemont Feb. 27 to March 1. (Representing the Diocese of Evansville at the convocation were Father David Nunning, pastor of St. Wendel Church, St. Wendel, and Justin Clements, diocesan director of Stewardship and Development.) Although Pope John Paul II's document on preparing for the new millennium, "Tertio Millen- nio Adveniente," asked the church to use the final four years of the decade to prepare for the Great Jubilee Year, many dioceses have just begun their preparations for the celebration. The Archdiocese of Philadel- phia, however, is now in year six of its archdiocesan spiritual renewal process. Prayer cards emblazoned with the theme "Catholic Faith and Life 2000" have been distributed around the archdiocese. Detailed training and resource materials have been pub- lished as well. Also under way is a parish renewal movement. The Diocese of Phoenix pub- lished 125,000 copies of a bilin- gual booklet, including Sunday Gospels for 1997 with reflection questions for families to use at home. Every Catholic home in the diocese received a copy of the 60-page booklet at the beginning of Advent through the diocesan newspaper, The Catholic Sun. The diocese began its jubilee celebrations with an outdoor Ash Wednesday service attend- ed by 11,000. A musical play reflecting on 2,000 years of Catholic Christian history is being produced for performance around the diocese this fall. The Archdiocese of Miami has created resource materials and prayer cards as well, in English and Spanish, in addition to other materials. The Archdiocese of Detroit has a variety of resources avail- able, from praye_r cards to starter packets for small group Position Available when You Need... Someone You Can Trust!
