16 The Message -- for Catholics of Southwestern Indiana Six alumni of St. Meinrad and innsbruck near ann; By PAUL R. LEINGANG Message editor Six priests of the Diocese of Evansville are approach- ing the thirty-fifth anniver- sary of their ordination, March 30. Msgr. Charles Koch attended Mater Dei High School in Evansville for his freshman year, then went to St. Meinrad. There he joined the other five classmates who had begun high school in what was then known as the Minor Seminary. The six classmates completed high school and college at St. Meinrad, and four years of the- ology study at Innsbruck, Aus- tria, where they were ordained together by Bishop Paul Rusch on March 30, 1963. Msgr. Kenneth R. Knapp is Vicar General, Dean of the Evans- ville East Deanery, and pastor of Christ the King Church, Evans- ville. He was born March 18, 1937. He is a native of Haubstadt. In addition to his parish ser- vice, Msgr. Knapp has been a teacher at Mater Dei High School in Evansville, superin- tendent of Washington Catholic High School in Washington, director of Catholic Charities for the diocese, director of the Cen- ter for Human Development in Washington, D.C., vicar-gener- al, chancellor and Moderator of the Curia. He and Msgr. Koch were given the title, Msgr., Oct. 21, 1980. Msgr. Charles Koch, Judicial Vicar, heads the diocesan tri- bunal. He was born Sept. 4, 1937. He is a native of Evansville. Following his ordination in 1963, Father Koch completed his MSGR. MSGR. FATHER FATHER FATHER KNAPP KOCH GRAEHLER KIESEL LUTZ graduate studies at Catholic University of America in Wash- ington, D.C., and returned to the diocese in 1964 to begin work in the tribunal--where he has con- tinued in various positions for nearly 34 years. He has also served at several parishes in Evansville and Mount Vernon. Father Kenneth L. Graehler is pastor of St. Mary Church, Sullivan. He was born in Jasper, Sept. 20, 1937. Father Graehler served as an assistant at parishes in Evans- ville, Boonville, Newburgh, Haubstadt and Washington. He also taught at Memorial and Rex Mundi high schools in Evansville. He was named pastor of St. Peter, Linton, and administrator Of St. Joan of Arc, Jasonville, in 1973; co-pastor of St. Ferdinand Church, Ferdinand, in 1977; pas- tor of St. Bernard Church, Rock- port, in 1980; pastor of St. Philip Neri Church, Bicknell, in 1985; pastor of St. Wendel Church, St. Wendel, in 1990, and pastor of St. Mary, Sullivan, in 1991. Father Leo C. Kiesel is Dean of the Washington Deanery and pastor of two parishes in the deanery, St. John Church in Loo- gootee and St. Mary Church in Shoals. Jasper, Indiana After serving as an assistant pastor at parishes in Evansville and Newburgh, Father Kiesel was named co-pastor of St. John the Baptist Church, Newburgh, in 1970; pastor of St. Martin Church, Chrisney, in 1976; pas- tor of St. Agnes Church, Evans- ville, in 1978; pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Petersburg, in 1985, adding responsibilities for Blessed Sacrament Church in Oakland City in 1987. He was appointed to St. John Church, Loogootee, in 1990, and added responsibilities for St. Mary Church, Shoals, in 1997. Father Bernard A. Lutz is pastor of Holy Cross Church, Fort Branch. He was born at Snake Run near Fort Branch, Oct. 9, 1937. For a large portion of his priestly life, Father Lutz was involved in Newman ministry at Vincennes University, at Indiana State University in Evansville (now USI), and as diocesan coordinator of the Newman Apostolate.
