12 The Message -- for Catholics of Southwestern Indiana Cardinal sees computer technology as evangelizati .LOS ANGELES (CNS) b Computers may be the newest way to spread the Gospel, ac- cording to Cardinal Roger M. Mahony of Los Angeles. But "it is not enough to use the media simply to spread the Christian message and the church's authentic teaching," Cardinal Mahony said. "It is also necessary to integrate that message into the 'new cul- ture' created by modern com- munications." While there are problems with some of the information being made available and with people not having the means to access the various systems, the cardinal said, "cyberspace has the capacity to be the modern sho're of the Sea of Galilee along which the Lord walks calling disciples to himself." Cardinal Mahony made his remarks in a paper presented during the March 4-8 plenary sessions of the Pontifical Coun- cil on Social Communications at the Vatican. The text of the paper, titled "Religious Information and Evangelization in North Amer- ican Data Networks," was re- leased in Los Angeles. Not all the sites have official Catholic sponsorship, he said. Cardinal Mahony said that while the founder of one ser- vice, Catholic Online, says he allows only those organizations and services in agreement with the magisterium to appear, "a crucial question remains: Who is to decide what views are in agreement with the magis- terium?" "In those parts of the world where society has become ex- tensively depersonalized, where people look on one an- other as problems and even as threats," Cardinal Mahony said, "the new technologies provide an opportunity for peo- ple to come into contact once again."
