Schoel- telk<tte, of Evansvilh; is re- covering from injuries he suf- fer(;(l in a fall while vacationing in Costa Rica, Feb. 24. Msgr S(:hoettelkotte injured his right shoulder when he fell while walking up an incline, an hour before he was to return home from vacation. After examination al a hos- pital in Tilajari, Costa Rica, Msgr. Schoettelkotte was transferred to a larger hospi- tal at San Jose, Costa Rica, where surgery was performed the night after the accident, to repair his broken shoulder. A series of ambulances and assisted airport transfers -- changing planes three times -- brought him to St. Mary's Medical Center in Evansville on Wednesday, Feb. 26. In a telephone interview from his hospital room on Tuesday, he said he expected to be released from St. Mary's Medical Center on March 3. He expected to spend some time in the nursing area of St. John's Home, operated by the Little Sisters of the Poor, in Evansville, before he could return to his independent liv- ing apartment. He said his doctor told him that it would take three months for his shoulder t heal. Msgr. Schoettelkotte- who is 82 years of age on March 6 -- was vacationing in Costa Rica with a friend, Msgr. Michael Wolf, pastor of the Pro-Calhedral of the Most Holy Trinity, Ewmsville. Msgr. Schoettelkotte said he fell when he was walking tip an incline toward a path. lie said he thought the way was smooth, but the under- brush prevented him from seeing how rough it was. After his fall, he was taken to the hospital by the staff of the tour group. After his surgery, and dur- ing the ordeal of the flight back home, Msgr. Schoet- telkotte had his right shoul- der in a cast. He said the cast has now been replaced by a sling. Msgr. Schoettelkotte was ordained in 1934, aod served at parishes in Indianapolis and Evansville. tie was dire(:- tar of Catholic Charities in Evansville and for the DiM- cese of Evansville from 1940 to 1970. He founded the Catholic Theatre Guild in 1945; he taught at St. Mary School of Nursing and at what was then (:ailed the Evansville College. He also served as editor of the dioce- san newspaper, the South- western Indiana Edition of the Register, from 1956 to 1971.
