2 The Message -- for Catholics of Southwestern Indiana Serra Club essay contest winners Eighth graders in Catholic schools in the Evansville area participated in the twentieth annual Serra Club essay con- test. This year's topic was "How Can I Discover the Life Choice (Vocation) God is Calling Me to in My Life?" Joey Hayden, a student at St. Matthew School, Mount Vernon, received first place honors, and Meghan Hatfield, a student at Holy Rosary School, Evansville, received second place. By JOEY HAYDEN St. Matthew School, Mount Vernon "How can I discover the life choice God is cMling me to in my life?" This question is asked a lot not only by adult Christians but young ones as well. It is true that God calls certain people to fulfill certain ministries, but noticing God's call is difficult. A boy asked his father, "Dad, I'm not sure if God is calling me to service or not. Sometimes it seems He is, but other times itseems He isn't." The father's reply was that if you continue to fol- low the Christian way of life and your prayer life's strong that when you get the calling you will know that it's God and that He's calling you to a certain ministry. Qualities that some Christians see and admire in peo- ple that are to be considered good models of Christian living are care and concern. Some people acknowledge Christ with their lips then deny Him by their lifestyle, but those who show care and concern through their action are models of what Jesus taught. Loyalty, for both Christ and friends, is a quality that Christian mod- els should have. If you devote your life to Jesus through any ministry you are saying I'll be loyal to God's call. This is a quality that involves a lot of dedication and hard work. All people are called to a service whether to marry, be single, or become a religious sister, brother or priest. Sister Christine Kempf of St. Matthew's parish was attracted to the, ministry of a religious sister by the idea of service to others. She says that the fulfillment of knowing that she has made a difference to others through this service has kept her from not leaving this ministry. She also finds the feelings of fulfillment, ded- ication, service to others and letting others see the value of service through her to be most rewarding. Dan Hayden, the high school Bible class teacher, was attract- ed to this ministry because he felt there was a need for young adults to continue Christian education. He says the enjoy- ment of working with young people and watching them grow has kept him from not leaving this ministry. The most rewarding part of this ministry to him is watching the young adults grow and develop new friendships. A person who has influenced my life in a positive way is my grandfather, Deacon Bob Hay- den. He has shown me that no matter how old you are you never stop getting the call to serve God and others. Faith-filled young Christians can grow in faith and spread the "Good News" by being active members in the church community, whether it be by joining the church youth group or just by setting an example for the younger people in the church. g/i! Then when you find your calling you will most likely say as written in 1 Timothy 1:12, "I thank Christ who enabled me, for putting me into the ministry." He wants us to help others, not because we want something in return but because we enjoy helping the less fortunate. We all have an impor- tant role in the church and we need to be aware of what that role is. How do we know what this role is? That's a good question that you have to answer in your own way. Sister Jane Nesmith knew in her heart that God was calling her to commit her life to him. She suggests that you ask yourself what you think you want to do in life and then ask yourself why it is that you want to do that. Her parents did not want her to become a sister, but she was very persistent about it. She asked God to give her a sign if she should become a sister. She asked God to let her have a spir- itual dream to show her what heaven would look like. If he II I KofC CounCil 565 2901 W. Maland St. Evansville, Ind.
