LEINGANG Message editor Father William Deering, diocesan director of worship, is encouraging parishes to "let our symbols speak!" The com- ment came in a letter sent to all parishes and institutions in the diocese about preparations for Lent and Easter. Father Deering cited liturgi- cal instructions that the entire celebration of the Easter vigil should take place "after night- fall or end before the dawn of Sunday." He noted that Easter, April 16, is about two weeks later this year than last year. He said that if the symbolism of the "light service" of the Easter Vigil is to speak to peo- ple, the service should not begin until nightfall. Father Deering also noted that Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 1, and con- cludes with the beginning of the Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday, April 13. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and ab- stinence. All Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence. Oppor- tunities for almsgiving during Lent include Operation Rice See LENT pa$fe 3 lville, 1968 -- 1975; and pastor of St. Raphael Church, Dubois, 1975 1978. Father Allega was appointed pastor of St. Thomas, near Vin- cennes, in 1978. He has contin- ued to serve as pastor, despite health problems including cancer -- in recent years.
