2 The Message -- for Catholics of Southwestern Indiana Plans and proposals revealed for Old Cathedral, V" "By PAUL R. LEINGANG Message editor Museum displays, a new ad- dition to house rare books, and development of the entire Old Cathedral complex -- these are all among the possibilities under discussion in Vincennes. A series of proposals is being developed, according to Holy Names Sister Louise Bond, diocesan chancellor. She is co- ordinating the planning efforts which were initially focused on the Brut Library. The initial work was made possible with a planning grant from Lilly Endowment. Proposals are currently being drawn up in three areas: Old Cathedral complex overall site. One of the ideas being con- sidered is the restoration of the St. Gabriel College building as well as the 1840 Library adja- cent to the Old Cathedral it- self. Connecting the church to the adjacent building would provide more space for parish use, restrooms, handicapped access and other benefits. Other construction work being considered is connecting the St. Rose Chapel to the Brut Library, and construc- tion of an addition to the Li- brary to house a ground-floor vault for the rare book collec- tion. Rare books from the Bishop Brut collection are currently housed in a base- ment vault. The preliminary architec- tural concept and interior de- sign have been drawn up by Rupert Condict and Profes- sional Consultants, Inc., both of Evansville; and Rowland As- sociates of Indianapolis. Development of the site would encompass all of the buildings on the Old Cathedral property and the old cemetery, and would include connecting paths to the George Rogers Clark Memorial, operated by the National Parks Service. Lorraine Olley, a rare book specialist at IU's Lilly Library in Bloomington, is working on the plan to preserve -- and in some cases, restore -- the priceless books that were col- lected by Bishop Brute, first bishop of Vincennes.
